HWHII Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 I would like to share with all of you my experience this summer driving my truck and hauling my trailer across country on personal business. I was informed by a state trooper that I needed a US DOT number for my truck. I always thought it was for a vehicle over 10,000 lbs. apparently not so. It is any vehicle and trailer over 10,000 lbs licensend to a company or even if it is personal vehicle with company advertiseing on it or not. If you are conducting business like going to a craft fair you need to comply. Not all states mandate this but most do. If you are crossing state lines you proubably need it. States are cracking down big time as a revenue maker. You can even be pulled over if they suspect you of being a small hauler. Fines and penelties can be stiff and can even lead to impounding of your vehicle if you can not pay the fine on the spot. They let me off with a warning. <_< For more info check out http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov. Quote
