Fatfudd
I have a 250lb Hay Budden anvil with a stamp on the other side of the anvil and I was wondering if any of you have ever seen this before, and also if so, was there more lettering in the original stamping. I have attached 2 pictures and I have tried various ways to to see if I could enhance lettering that might be partially hidden. I've tried chalk, rubbing and flour, All I see is what's in the picture- "B&H" and underneath that "Our Best". I have assumed some hardware company stamped it for resale, but that's a guess. Thanks for your help
Private Entrance
My 115# HB has similar markings on it from a company that previously owned it. I don't remember exactly what it is, but will try to have a look and post it over the weekend.
Sask Mark
Anvils in America lists one of the Hay Budden stampings as: 'R&H' 'S.F. Our Best' Apparently they were a hardware company based in San Francisco. The example in the book also had the Hay Budden stamping on the other side. Does yours also? Fatfudd
It does have the Hay Budden stamping on the other side. What I thought was a B could be an R. Thanks Sask Mark!
Sask Mark
My pleasure! It looks like a lovely anvil.
marcusb
I also owned an HB with a name and city stamped on it. Took awhile but found out it was large tool dealer back in the day. Sounds like they marked anvils like the do car bumpers now. Little free advertising
Private Entrance
Went out and looked at mine today. It's marked 'Sleg Iron Co, Davenport, IA' right above the HB logo/stamp.
Sask Mark
Congrats! You have a stamping that isn't listed in the most recent edition Anvils in America.
Private Entrance
Wow. That's pretty cool. I couldn't find much about Sleg doing a Google search, other than that there was such a company in Davenport in about 1905.
