Francis Trez Cole Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Had a little extra time made a 3 pound swedish hammer out of 4140. It has a nice feel to it. looking at making other styles in the days ahead Quote
dablacksmith Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 nice lookin hammer ! but... plastic handle???? Quote
Francis Trez Cole Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 fiberglass not plastic. reduces vibration better protection for you body. plus hammer handles that are wood get to large for my liking when you go above a 2 pound hammer. Quote
David Gaddis Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Very nice. I bet knocking the hole through the 4140 was a pretty good job too. In the past I thought that was my choice of steel..but not now...unless I have a hydraulic punch or strong stiker close by. I have been convinced to retreat to 1045 etc Quote
Rich Hale Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I tried fiberglass handles long ago,,went back to wood and prefer wood. When I fit a new wood handle it gets thinned a lot.. I am like youi in that a fat wood handle does not work for me. Quote
Francis Trez Cole Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 david no I punch it through by my self to punch drift and shape takes me an hour. then I normalize dress and heat treat. the interesting thing I found about 4140 is that when you use it to make punches it has a dead feel to it. So I use 5160 or A2 it has a better feel. O ya I am a one mad shop no striker. I do have a power hammer and I use it for some of the shaping. Rich I help a lot of students and the biggest problem is they hold on to the handle to tight and the fiberglass is a little more forgiving in the conduction of vibrations. Quote
