newbie37 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I'm looking to buy my first coal forge and found one on craigs list. I do not know what is a fair price for this forge though does any one knoe anything about this forge all it says in the ad is it is a Buffalo and it works Quote
Daniel.85 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 For me, on craigslist stuff, if its $100 or less its a good deal... more than 250 it better be pretty darn nice or rare/cool. Not sure if this one has sold for that price. http://springfield.craigslist.org/tls/2848156534.html Quote
AmosC Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 newbie37,I picked up one almost identical to that for $50. Cleaned it up and put a little oil in the blower and has been going strong for five years now. Mine was found in a farmers field and I did all the clean up so you can probably expect to pay a bit more for that one. Quote
Stuart Stegall Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I believe there's been a significant rise in the price of coal forges in the past 5-6 years, like on the order of $50 (I purchased 2 of them for this, 1 CL, 1 in Person) to starting at around $250. Only speaking of complete setups with the blower here. Anvils have gone up over the years, and in some ways their prices are even worse considering their material/labor costs. Quote
Backwoods Blacksmith Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Check out the price of a new fire pot, clinker breaker and tyrue from Centaur Forge and compair it to the condition of the one advertized. This should give you an idea of the value. The table and legs are frosting on the cake. Quote
David Einhorn Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 That looks like it might be s 20th Century U.S. Army blacksmith forge. If you are into historic collectable or even attending early 20th Century military living history, and the forge was in excellent condition, then it would be a good deal for you. There has been previous discussions on 20th century military forges, I don't remember if this one was WWI or WWII. Quote
joshua.M Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I agree 100% with stewart, if you PAY GOOD MONEY for somthing you are more likley to get a GOOD QUALITY TOOL, and you will respect it better because you had to WORK for it and not pay pocket change for a XXXX forge/anvil that you wont respect to the same degree Quote
newbie37 Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 I agree I dont mind spending the money on a good tool I just wasnt sure what they are worth. but now with whats been said on here and browsing CL and ebay I realize it is a good deal Quote
