gator13 Posted February 25, 2012 Share Posted February 25, 2012 guys i'm looking at buying an anvil that has a cast iron base and horn and a steel face. its 100lbs. for 100$. wondering if i should buy it or not. i currently have on anvil that was made from railroad track, but it doesnt have pritchell hole or hardy. MLMartin Posted February 25, 2012 Share Posted February 25, 2012 BE CAREFUL I do not think that anvil has a steel face. It is clearly a modern cast anvil. And I do not believe anyone is still casting anvils with a cast iron bottom and steel face. It is probably fully cast iron. Go see it before you through down any money. Take a large ball bering or a little hammer with you, lightly tap or drop the hammer / ball bering and see if it bounces back more than 60% of the height dropped. If it bounces back less then its probably all cast iron. I know you can see the "face line" but its probably just cast like that to imitate having a steel face.
