October 12, 201114 yr Just bought a bick for use on my anvil. The stake is tapered. Can I forge this down to square to fit or must it be ground to fit? Thanks!
October 12, 201114 yr The mini anvil from e-bay? I have one of those. You can forge it down, but watch the fire. I burned off the end of mine while getting the top hot enough. I got it fairly close, then finished with a grinder.
October 12, 201114 yr I'd grind myself; ductile is a form of cast iron and cast is not known for forging well.
October 16, 201114 yr When I worked as an intern at the General Motors foundry that made engine blocks and ductile iron cranks, they still had a blacksmith on staff and he told me that it is possible to forge ductile iron. You will have to keep heat much lower than for steel since the high carbon content significantly lowers the melting temperature compared to mild steel.
October 16, 201114 yr Patrick: Was that in Indiana? They had a really different hammer, like maybe 100 pound?
