RyanErnst
sorry if this is blazed everywhere i never really seen anything on this but i have a question, now isnt there coal forges and then forges for other fuels? my question is would charcoal or another fuel work in a coal forge or vise versa, does it matter what the forge is if it works and what is the difference between the two, i've seen quite a few but i dont know the differences, when i make a new one i want it to work the best it can, thanks in advance
John B
There are forges/hearths for all types of fuels, gas, oil, solid fuel(coke/coal/charcoal) Each can be made specific to a)The fuel being used b)The type of work being done, They can be bottom blast or side blast There are as many recommendations as there are 'blacksmiths' for depths of, and types of, hearth designs. All need an air supply which is controllable. For your situation, which fuel is easily and regularly available to you? Decide what typ of items you will be making, a blade makers requirements is different to a general 'smith or other specialist area of smithing You can use different fuels in the same hearth, but some will work better than others, and each have their own peculiarities as to how to use them most efficiently. Browse the forges forums and see what suits you, they are as simple or complicated as you want to make them, and many 'smiths have more than one to suit what they are heating. Using different fuels in a hearth is always going to be a compromise, but it can be done.
