band saw blades

Featured Replies

I have chance to get saw band saw blades from a band saw mill. The material is D6a metal. Would this be good for knives?

Yes it would. Properly heat treated the edge can be long lasting and only need a light stropping to keep the edge keen.

If it has teeth welded or soldered on it is not likely going to hold an edge band saw blades used to cut wood are usually L-6 steel and it is a wonderful knife steel.

I am a saw filer in a pine mill. The steel they are using in bandsaw blades these days is 15N20 usually made by Uddeholm in Sweden. And yes, it is very good for knife blades. Soon, I'm going to experience with combining several layers of it with a couple of old files, also from work, and see what kind of blade I come up with.

I Show D6A as being a Fe ( Iron ) base w/ 0.46 C, 1.0 Cr, 1.0 Mo, 0.55 Ni. Personally I would classify that as a high strength med. carbon steel @ 0.46% Carbon I'm guessing this is a Bi-metalic blade the teeth are probably some other type of steel.

Hope this helps

Jens
