I have a set of old tongs I can not figure out what they were designed to be used for. one side of the jaws is flat with a groove, the other side has a bulge at the front.

i've decided to rework these tongs to a box jaw of sorts, if i can't find out what they are meant for.

Tim, I just saw another pair very similar to what you are showing in your sketch. They said that they can be used to handle different sizes and shapes (round, square, hex) all with a universal type tong. I do not have any. But that made sense to me. Hope this helps. :D

I'd say for holding angle iron.
