steven30127
Hi all, I just got picked up a very good condition anvil. The weight is 172lbs (this weight is stamped on the lower left front foot...that is the lower left when you are facing the horn head on. To the right of that number is the serial number 1145854. I was told this was a Hay Budden anvil. Does this serial number jive with Hay budden? The interesting thing is that there are no other markings logos, or anything anywhere else on the anvil. Could someone give me an idea of exactly what I've got? Thanks Steven
thecelticforge
Anvil's in America by Richard Postman has a list of serial numbers by year for Trenton, Hay-Budden and Arm & Hammer. Remember all three made anvils for others with the buyer's logo on them. However, if you see a serial number on the front foot it is by one of the three. You then have to look at the bottom. Most Trentons have an oval depression. Most Hay-Buddens have an hourglass depression. Arm & Hammers might have oval, but their unique characteristic is the area under the heel were rough finished. Thanks Steven I don't have my copy of AIA in front of me but given the fact that the weight is on the left front foot with the serial # to the right I would say that it is a Trenton. Hay Budden has the serial # on the left foot with the weight stamped under the "Brooklyn NY" that is on the waist of the anvil. Pictures of the anvil and bottom of the anvil will tell us what it is. You can also rub chalk on the side of the anvil, with the horn to your right, and possibly see the makers name/logo.
