Mark Wargo New2bs Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Anyone know what this tool is? By boss's husband found it and thought it might be a blacksmithing tool, so they brought it to me. The roller appears to be made of a course porous material and the arm it is on is hinged. Mark Quote
martensite Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 What you have there is a sharpening stone for a sickle mower. The handle is for applying pressure onto the mower knives,it sharpens two blades in one pass, that is why the stone is tappered. You also are missing some peices as it should have a handcrank to turn the gear which spins the stone. dkunkler Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Here's some photos of a sickle grinder in a little better condition. http://www.goantiques.com/scripts/images,id,1302505.html# Quote
Iron Clad Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Okay, I want one of those! Cool Tool. I could use it on my sickle mower. I have a sickle mower that was made in 1885 and still works great. The blades need sharpened though. I still use it! Quote
Sukellos Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 We had one of those on our farm when I was a kid. I tried to adapt it to grind swords when I was a teenager. Limited success! :D Quote
