Will any old coarse rasp work as a hot rasp or do I need a farrier or "blackmsith" model?

Any rasp will work for hot rasping as the metal is softer than the rasp. The coarser, the faster it works but you have to watch you don't get too coarse as it can be hard to start the file.

If you know a farrier ask them for their old rasp, its a good way to remove some metal fast. If you don't know any farriers you can ask at any horse stables who they use. They pitch those old rasp and they say there dull but their plenty sharp for us blacksmith.

Bad Creek Blacksmith is absolutely correct. I was a farrier and I know. The rasp is the most expensive tool that a farrier uses because they need them to be sharp, and they replace them very often.

drgas, ive got 7 years worth of old rasps. next time im going to danny wards ill shoot you a pm and give you as many as you want.
