October 31, 200916 yr Hello! I have been lurking and reading for awhile and have a question. I am just getting started. I built a coal forge with an electric blower, have a couple of hammers, couple of tongs, and a brand new anvil (after 3 months of looking I just couldn't find a used one that was priced decent or not worn out). My forge is located outside my shop at my house. Will it hurt to leave my anvil outside? It is a 150lb anvil chained on top of a 20" Persimmon Stump. I could unchain it and set the anvil in my shop after each use, but it would be a lot easier to leave it out. I could cover it with a plastic garbage bag, but wasn't sure if that might be worse if it trapped condensation inside. What do you folks recommend? thanks, Greg
October 31, 200916 yr I would position it under an overhang if possible, and apply a heavy coating of auto-polish after each use.
October 31, 200916 yr How is your neighborhood? Just picked up a 174lb on a bigger stump. 2 guys carried it 30 feet then popped it in my truck. Ken
October 31, 200916 yr My Hay Budden has sat outside on and off for the thirty plus years I have owned it. Last I checked, most of it is still there. You could certainly wipe it with an oily rag and or cover it with a scrap of rubber roof or something.

Ken I'm more worried about the rusting damage from being outside than theft. I am fortunate to have a retired neighbor who is home all the time and has a birdseye view of my shop from the front of his house. He finally learned what my dad's truck looks like and quit calling me every time dad went down to my shop to borrow something.
November 1, 200916 yr I too have an "outside" shop and cover my anvil first with a worn out demin shop apron and then two heavy duty garbage bags. No rust at all...I sometimes wipe the anvil down with motor oil or linseed oil and sop up the excess.
November 2, 200916 yr I have used a rag soaked with WD-40 and draped over my anvil it seems to work pretty well though mine is in a shop but still should work outside
November 2, 200916 yr even inside you anvil will rust if you dont use it it only takes 2 weeks if you live somewhere with humidity like me
November 2, 200916 yr A bit of surface rust is no problem, it's better than trying to work on an oily face.
