1080 Steel Blank

Featured Replies

My R&D Group is developing a new switch point detail and needs a rail bloom to make prototypes. To get this material we ordered probably the biggest knife blank on record today. It is 8" X 10" in cross section and 54 feet long.

This would make a lot of blades!

See if you can scavenge some scrap! Years ago when the US Navy was building its "Arleigh Burke" class destroyers I had the opportunity to visit a friend who worked in the mill that was making the connecting steel bars for use in the modular construction of the ships. I'm not sure of the exact application of the steel but the chunk my friend gave me was enough for five blades. I made him two, one for his brother, one for his Dad and one for my brother. It forged like bearing steel, but when annealed, filed like cold butter. I triple quenched the blades in canola oil and triple tempered to a dark straw, almost bronze color. To this day I am not sure how to classify the steel but the knives are still cutting and are performing well....at least I've had no complaints. Scraps are good!:)

a knife made from US Navy Destroyer, now that's a marketing concept. how can we arrange for someone to get us a piece of Titanic?

For some reason after reading the first post Crocodile Dundee saying "That's not a knife, this is a knife," comes to mind. Not sure how one would carry or let alone use one that big but I m sure we can find a way.
