John B
This year Foreground are staging Independent State, a project which has commissioned three artists: Bob and Roberta Smith, Edwina Ashton and Matt Stokes to initiate major new collaborative works that will form entries into Frome Carnival 2009. DESIGN AND FABRICATION After a few visits to Frome and chats with members of bands and other people, mostly on the punk/hardcore scene, the outline design is complete and the fabrication has now begun. From conversations, many people thought that the main structure should be abstract and pretty irregular, but quite complex at the same time, and that it should be intricate in parts. Another strong comment from people was that it should feel as if it's being restrained in some way. So, the design has tried to incorporate these ideas The main shape, which gives it scale, is made of repeated geometric volumes (icosahedrons!) constructed from steel-plate, which grow from/off one another. The icosahedrons will form a number of, kind of crystaline shapes. These will seem as though they are strapped together using forged rope, which is knotted in parts and looks like it is pulled taught. There will also be a number of forged straps, that will partly act as tie-offs to secure the finished piece to the trailer for the Carnival ... - so it will change in the making. See some of the components for the monument in progress at the Forge-in Festival this weekend (on both the 12th and 13th September), alongside live music from numerous bands Forging will take place between 12pm and 6pm on both days Bring along a hammer and join in Location is behind the Frome Youth Community Centre on Vallis Road Edited September 9, 2009 by John B removed invalid link and inserted location instead
