collijs Posted September 8, 2009 Share Posted September 8, 2009 Hello all! Bought a Champion 400 blower ($60- Score!) and am trying to remove the fan shaft/worm gear to replace the ball bearings. They are mostly frozen in place. 1)Have the fan and fan shroud removed but cannot get the rear nut (at the crank end) off to access the bearings. Is it reverse thread? 2) There is a seal/cap of some sort at the fan end of the shaft as well. Does this tap out or is it threaded? Everything has been soaked daily with "liquid wrench". HWooldridge Posted September 11, 2009 Share Posted September 11, 2009 Both caps are threaded and should unscrew normally counterclockwise - they are not reverse threaded. I'd use channel-locks (gently) to break them loose. The cap nut probably has a cotter key so look for that. Let us know if you need any more help. collijs Posted September 13, 2009 Author Share Posted September 13, 2009 Got it, thank you. The teeth on my channel locks were just eating the metal but it finally broke free. No cotter key seen. Bearings at fan end look good. I'll replace ones at back end soon. My wife and I are starting a day camp for foster children. We will be doing some blacksmithing with the kids.
