May 26, 200917 yr a while back ago i bought a tanto with a nice blade at a knife store in Amarillo texas. When i got it home my brother knocked it off a counter and it hit the tile floor, breaking the cheap wooden handle. It turns out the blade was a partial tang. Is there anyway to convert it to a full tang.
May 28, 200917 yr I would guess you could just cut off the partial tang and weld on a full one with a mig/tig/whatever welder. Being new to this though I may be wrong.
May 28, 200917 yr you could weld on a tang but.... it will be a weak spot . what type of steel is the blade made from? most of the cheap knives are cheap for a reason.. poor steel and poor heat treating and cheap construction.. i hesatate to reccomend doing anything with it because it is most likely not going to hold up to use .. sorry
May 29, 200917 yr Author lol i just wanted to fix it up a bit so i could give it away to a friend or sell it or something so i dont have to deal with it anymore. its 440c and the tang is about 3/4" long
May 29, 200917 yr Tig it if you can. I snapped the blade on a TL-29 30yrs ago tigged it ground it used it. Its still in the tool box. Ken
May 29, 200917 yr If you don't have access to Tig then use silver brazing. It is more than adequately strong. Silver works very well with stainless steels. It is also much easier to control than copper brazing because of the lower temperature. I agee that TIG is best but Silver is probably better stick welding in this application.
