April 17, 200917 yr I was given an old forge and have no idea what I've got...except that it is really old. It looks much like the two in the attached pix...more like the 2nd picture (four-legged version). Can anyone help me with a best guess? Thanks.

April 17, 200917 yr Coal forges that size and shape are old rivet forges. They used to construct buildings and bridges with rivets, so these forges were pretty common. They usually heat up a small area of a bar, about 2 or so inches in length, in my humble experience.

They usually heat up a small area of a bar, about 2 or so inches in length, in my humble experience. ya that is what i think it is .. ive used one like this and it worked ok... if you are doing big items or forge welding you need to mound the coal and foddle with fire more than a forge with a deep firepot.. it is a coal forge but you can use charcoal or coke in this type of forge .. enjoy
