Sam Salvati
Scored this cast iron stand a few days ago. It is a stand off of an old stone wheel grinder, grinder was scrapped (old thing, poured Babbitt bearings), but I managed to atleast save the stand. I set my anvil on top and it is pretty nice. It is a bit high, so I might end up setting my KMG grinder on it instead, I will have to see. The stand is about 100+ pounds of cast iron. element
Nice find, Just bolt it to the floor? and secure your anvil on top. Did you try your 'new' anvil yet? the one you had made.
Sam Salvati
Hehe Eric no need to, it is too heavy to move around. It kinds of stinks as an anvil stand actually, you get sort of a hollow dull ring noise. I think I will modify it to hold my grinder maybe, but that would take alot of fenangling, so maybe just my bench grinder/buffer. Not sure yet what to do with it. Rob Browne
Try filling it with sand to dull the ringing noise. If its too high can you dig the base in a bit. Looks like it would be worth the efffort.
ichudov
I think that nothing beats a tree log for an anvil stand. And those are free or nearly so. Sell that cast iron stand, you will get good money for it, and get a tree log. Here's how my anvil is set:Peter Wright Anvil Edited April 10, 2009 by ichudov
Fe-Wood
I vote for sand or gravel fill- Also, you could build up the floor with plywood.... comfy to stand on too... I have a log base and am tired of chasing if around the shop when I get to whaling on it. I'm going to build a tripod stand in the very near future... Oh' nice find by the way
tinbender
well the other guys beat me to it so I could just say ditto. I'm a fan of mass so vote yes for sand fill, setting the concrete down or the floor up are both good ideas. Have fun with it and let me know if you find another one you don't need:) Dave
Chad J
no matter what you make of it, nothing beats cheap or free!:)
