  1. I went to the hardware store to get a choke for my burner and this nifty hammer jumped out at me. I couldn't resist. And this little bad boy will be the choke.
  2. Ah I got you. I have seen both then. Didn't know that the end one was also a choke. Thanks for the education.
  3. I'm talking about a sleeve that slides over the holes on the sides of the burner. I don't know what a primary and secondary choke is. The only one I am aware of is the one I just described.
  4. The obstruction was attached to the seal that was in place. It was just barely attached and it was right in the airway. I know chokes have been discussed lots of times. I meant that no one suggested it to me on this thread. A choke will probably solve my burner issue with the fire in the tube. I'm gonna try and get parts today after work. If not I might just make one out of aluminum foil just to see what a difference it makes.
  5. I suppose I should add a choke to my burner. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that. Also yesterday I took my burner apart and inside where the nozzle attaches to the fuel line there was a piece of rubber washer impeding the flow of gas into the nozzle.
  6. Thanks for the encouraging words guys. I did a quick bend on the fork. It makes bending easy. A little practice and I might even get good at it
  7. I don't think I can change the title of the thread, but while I was at it I made a cutter too. It's made from railroad spikes and a piece of track anchor. One of the big j shaped anchors. I have another big chunk of that anchor that I'm making a vise spring from.
  8. I made a bending fork for my plate anvil. I know some people frown upon making tools by arc welding, but I figure it's the easiest way since I don't have much forging skills at this point. I left the head on the bottom spike and just ground it flat. It sits in the hole much better this way since it is how it was designed to fit. I used 2 spikes, and a piece of round stock I found somewhere. I will update when I use it and see how it performs.
  9. Yeah it's fun working with metal. I'm gonna make some more leaves. It's good practice. I made one from a railroad spike, but while drawing out the stem the leaf broke off.
  10. It's just a leaf, but I'm brand new to smithing so it's an accomplishment to me. It was made from some 1/4" square from a little shelf thing I got for a buck at the thrift store.
  11. That's what I was thinking too. That it probably isn't heavy duty enough for forging purposes. Buzzkill I'd really like to see what your experiments come up with if you have a chance to do it.
  12. I've seen on Amazon and other online marketplaces these handheld induction heaters that are made for loosening old rusted nuts and bolts. I'm wondering if one of those could be used as a small forge. Does anyone here have any experience with these little heaters? They look like this
  13. Thanks Frosty. No there is no small door. Just the two big doors on the ends. Would the hot spot be the place that starts glowing first or is it a little harder than that to find?
  14. Finally got the plistix today. If my steel doesn't get yellow now I don't know
  15. Now that the rigidizer has been heated and cured I can see why the other layer is needed. The ceramic fiber is hardened now, but it can easily be chipped and flaked off when metal touches it. I'm sorry if I seem like an idiot, but I really need to learn hands on. I don't learn from books. I learn from doing. Now that I have done the rigidizer I can see that more is needed. It's gonna be a few days until I get the plistix, so I'm gonna be working on other things until then. I fired the forge today to finish curing and I won't fire it again until I seal it more. I appreciate all the advice. I would still be breathing fibers without it.
  16. I just ordered the plistix 900 from Atlas knife. Support small business.
  17. Ok Frosty. I'm sorry I bothered you. You can ignore me now.
  18. Hey Mikey. That sounds about right. Give or take a few years here and there. Time is the most valuable thing in life. Frosty you are missing something here. I am listening to you guys. My forge is not bare blanket anymore. I've done the first thing I was told I had to do. Maybe I'm missing something, but the rigidizer is what I thought I was told was absolutely necessary. If the fibers were encased in glass then wouldn't it be safe to use? Don't leave me man. I really appreciate your advice.
  19. Yeah I'm a youngster then
  20. So it is a lot safer now than it was before. I'm still gonna seal it up better, but I don't have the stuff yet. I'm not really a youngster. Maybe to you I am. How old are you?
  21. I thought that is what the rigidizer was for
  22. Ok I plan to get the plistix. For now is it OK to use as it is? I'm heading home from work right now. Gonna check the rigidity and sharpen my chainsaw.
  23. I rigidizered it and added another layer of blanket in the bottom of the forge. I also plugged the little round holes with some blanket and rigidizered that. Hopefully those plugs hold up And I wore rubber gloves and a 3M aura n95 mask while doing it
  24. I went ahead and did it. Added thicker bottom and doused it all with rigidizer Since I already rigidized should I get the plistix to seal it better?
  25. If I add this extra layer of insulation in the bottom of the forge will it be good or bad?
