  1. Wow! amazing first effort. Beautiful knife.

You say 'first forged knife' just wondering if you've done stock removal before? Either way great job!

    -LouieIV

Thanks Louie I do have some stock removal experience but that was some 15 years ago
I still have a piece of ATS34 I have been carrying that long a crossed 4 state in countless moves to remind me that I wanted to be a knife maker when I grow up.

Just to be clear this was not my fist attempt I destroyed a lot of good steel getting to this point since taking a introduction to bladesmithing class last October .
  2. Thanks a lot you guys I'm glad you like it biggrin.gif

Gene the handle is redhart I'm lucky to live real close to rockler woodworking they have some great deal on small pieces of exotic wood

Hey Red I never knew what that skull came from I was thinking coon don't know if we have big snappers like that here in Oregon, hope not it might put me off swimming a bit

  3. After a lot of disappointments or should I say learning experiences I have completed my fist forged knife I forged this from 5160 1"round stock the handle is Redheart with a copper spacer

  4. Good morning all:

Lyman -did you find a consensus on production quench oil? I printed the link you furnished and was hoping that there would be a discussion on production quench oil for blacksmith heat treating. Even in the Shell Line there are 3 different products, each with several viscosities. -tks grant

Sorry no I was going to try it but then I got my hand on some Parks AAA.
  5. Hi guy

I have been looking a local source for quench oil and so far all I'm coming up with Shell Voluta C400 and I wanted to see if any one has used this stuff and how they like it or don't

here is a link to the data sheet My link

I'm primarily working with 5160 and 1084 at the moment and I was thinking this stuff would work well for that. But really I'm just guessing and was hoping one of you smarter fellas who has some knowledge about quench oils could tell me more.

    thanks Lyman

  6. DSC_0180.jpgDSC_0179.jpg I have the 16 " model from riverside its my fist forge so I have nothing to compare it to but it will weld just fine. I fist used one of these forges last year at the ABS school in old Washington. I have no shots of it running yet.
I've been to busy playing with it :)
  7. Thanks guys I will take all of that in to consideration
I have one more question can any one tell me if shape of the tank matters. Most I have seen are round pipe is this for a reason or could I use 4 or 6 inch square of which I can get a bit more easily

  8. Hey Randy great looking collection you have there.
What kind of steel do you use and do you heat treat?
I'm thinking heat treating would be a wast of time do to all the heat they will conduct when in use
I stared making some out of mild steel a hot cut and a squaring die and I hope I didn't wast my time:(

  9. Hi guys
I'm planning to make a quench tank this week and I just wanted to get some input.

I'm thinking 4" or 6" pipe about 3 feet long welded to a steel plate , this is similar to what I used at the ABS school.

Is this the simple mater I think it is or am I missing something ?
Anything I'm over looking ? Any method or tips you care to share would help

    Thanks lyman

  10. Lube the oil holes , linkage pivots and top bearing cups with way oil [like Vetrax 2] or chainsaw bar oil, something with some cling so it doesn't just run out. The only points that should be greased are the pitman / crank bearing and the main shaft through the back, also maybe the treadle pivot if equipped with a grease fitting

The clutch works best with something light like diesel mixed 50/50 with 30 # motor oil.

Keep everything wet with oil, a shot at least every 4 hours.

Oil, any oil is cheaper than parts or downtime

thanks SGropp when you oil the clutch are you just squirting it around the inside and all over the wood shoe as well this is where I'm unclear
  11. Hi guys

I picked up a LG25# about a year ago and it been sitting all this time I'm finally at a point were I can put it to use.
This is my first hammer and I'm a little unclear on lubing it the grease nipples and oil holes are obvious but the clutch not so much. Dose this get grease or oil ? how often and is there a particular oil or grease that is best for these machines?
Unfortunately they didn't come with a manuals so any tips on maintaining it would help a lot

    Thanks Lyman

  12. Lyman, Dave Manzer has two videos out that I know of. I have them both and would recommend them highly. The first is about tuning a LG to get the best performance out of it. It does not cover repairs like pouring babbits, but does cover some general repair issues and is really outstanding when it comes to getting the timing adjusted correctly. The second video covers making tooling and also has a project section. Both are excellent and I refer to them often. If you need to do a re-build, look up the Little Giant website and see if you can get in to Sid's rebuilding class. It is a 2 1/2 day class held in March out in Nebraska. I have not done the class yet, but intend to one of these days! Good luck!

thanks a lot .....that's what I was hoping to hear sound like its just what I'm looking for and thanks for the class info don't think I be able to make it this year but as you said one of these days
  13. Thanks for all of your input it helped a lot

I had a look at her today she's beautiful smooth running and whisper quite

I think I'm in love .....so needless to say I gave him a deposit I'll be going back Monday with a trailer to pic her up

Thanks again I'll let you guy know how it all works out I'm sure there will be more questions
