That's why I'm building the jabod. Also, I can modify it easily until perfect. My first was a brake drum. Lots of fire but not hot enough.

I've posted this before. This is 2 pieces of fork lift tine welded together about 20" long. Lots of mass under the hammer. As good as any London pattern. Mounted 4" deep in the stump on a 1" bed of sand wedged all around so it doesn't move. The stump is 4" in the ground.

The smaller piece is rounded on top for a fuller.

I like the removable idea.

I have one I couldn't bring myself to put a handle on. I'll think about drill and tap.

I think they both turned out great. When I look at something made by a blacksmith I want to know it got hit by a hammer. Not made on a CNC.

I really like the S hook. I had to look up rim shoe. Didn't know what it was.

Whatever you do, don't take them without permission. They're very strict about that. Even though they are used.

Get on Google earth and follow the tracks to the nearest depot.

Phone directory. Any railway you call can tell you who owns it.

Watch for maintenance trucks. They can access the tracks from any intersection.

Steel, like wood, has a grain structure. Wood is stronger when bent to shape rather than cut to shape. Forging bends the grain rather than cutting through it.

Just my perception of it. Someone with more knowledge will correct me if I'm off track.

My dream hunt was always to take one with my longbow. I was a lot younger and healthier back then. I've heard the meat is very good.

That's exactly what it is. I think it would be a good tool for any shop. I will need to find the small tip.

I think I'll just play safe and use it the way it was designed. All I need is a small bottle of acetylene. Doesn't require oxygen.

I would think the frizzen. High carbon for the sparks.

This particular one is set up for gas and air. In other words it only has one knob and no trigger.

I guess anvil orientation is kinda like getting on a horse. I've mounted them from the right side before and the horse didn't seem to mind.  

Yeah, seems like $1.30 sticks in my head last time I filled my big tank. That was a couple years back though.

Talking about propane, is anybody familiar with a Smith's NE180 torch? I found one in an old toolbox in my Dads shop. It has a NE184-11 tip on it. I'm wondering if it will work with propane.

I know of a man about 35 minutes away that does some blacksmithing. Now that I'm feeling better I plan to pay him a visit.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad CGL. I lost mine to multiple miloma some years ago. Dads are where we get the answers to our questions.

I don't know of any members close by but that's ok. I'm looking forward to the project. I've had everything for some time now but just didn't feel good. I had a burning in my bladder and couldn't stay on my feet more than a few minutes at a time. My doctor said it was the chemo that was injected in my bladder during the first surgery. Yesterday he found a red irritated bladder and more tumors. He removed the tumors and scraped the bladder walls. Even though I had surgery yesterday, the burning is gone and I feel better than I have in over a month. I'm not going to over do it but I am going to take advantage of the situation.  

Keep praying. Its working.

My house tank is 250 gal. and is down to 20%. I've got to run it empty this time and replace the gasket under the volume gauge.

Hope it comes down soon.

Well folks, I'm still around. Reading pretty much every post. I still have a lot of questions but we'll get around to that someday.

For now I'm asking for prayers.

I told you in my initial post about the tumor in my bladder. Today was supposed to be my second surgery to clean up before treatments. My doctor had to remove 2 more tumors today so treatment is out. For now anyway.

I'll know more next Monday but looks like removal is going to be my next step.

So please keep me in your prayers. And, if anyone has had a similar experience I'd like to hear your story.

I'm planning to whip this. Losing is not an option. I've got most of the material to build a JABOD forge. Just need to feel well enough to do it. With your help and GOD'S will I'll be forging soon.

Have you looked at the existing pulley good? Most pulleys have the part number on them somewhere. It may be hard to see. Clean it good with a wire brush and use a good flashlight.

There are some very knowledgeable people here. I think you will be fine at 1750rpm. If you have plenty of torque and want to speed it up, you can do that later.

I looked at prices yesterday and the pulley I suggested above is the least expensive way to go.

Another thing, have you done any research on how many rpm's you should have at the cutoff wheel? You can speed it up with a larger pulley on the motor. Of coarse you will loose some torque.

A single 3vx belt running on 3" pulleys is good for 2.75 HP. Look for a 1/3v3.00 pulley and a JAx7/8" bushing. If you have a power transmission  store in your area they should have what you need for less than $50. Motion Industries or Applied Industrial Technologies is two but there are others.

How was the original pulley on the old motor configured? Was it two pieces?
