  1. Thanks people have called me that since I was about 12. I don't mind the cold too much it just makes all my old injuries ache a little more.

People around here don't drive too well in the snow and the streets aren't taken ccare of like they should.  I hope it drove some people into the hotel I work at. It's been slow. When I worked outside the snow did make it just that much more difficult. It'll probably be back in the fifties by the weekend hopefully . Sooner it warms up the sooner I can heat up some metal.

  2. Thomas, sign me up I love the southwest. I used to live in the high desert outside the Lancaster Palmdale area.

I woke up it's 2 degrees now with 25-30 mph gusts. Oh yeah almost forgot snowed again too. It was 50  and raining the other day.the Ohio valley anymore seems like there's only two seasons. 90 degrees with 95% humidity or cold and wet. That's enough boo hooing though it could turn into a permanent condition :(

  3. Olydemon, yep that sounds like what I was thinking. After I looked at it for a second it seemed pretty self explanatory. I Started typing before I started thinking. :) oops.  I do think they have personality in spades though. Im gonna give it a try soon. Have you tried rubbing anything dark into them then wiping off the high spots like you do with engraving.?

I'm off to work. Have a productive day folks.

  4. Copper is weird metal . Use definitely will polish it. I don't have much experience with it. I made an evaporator /condenser when I was a teenager. I tried making my own "beverages"  for a while.  I'd like to try some more sheet metal work though. I played with an English wheel and a power planisher at my friends bike shop but its not something I just took to. I need some practice but I did make a passable fender.

With a lot of help from him.

  5. I was referring to the planishing  done during manufacturing the kettle

I watched a documentary yesterday about a shop in Ohio that's been making copper kettles for over 100 years. It was on pbs. I think they're located near Columbus.

Bucyrus kettle works is the name of the place. I think Bucyrus is a town outside of Columbus but not 100 percent sure.

I also worked at a candy company long ago but it was a factory not a shop. I made air heads for van melle.

Anyhow mudman beautiful spoons and jlpservices I truly enjoy your videos you lay things out in an easy to understand way that can penetrate my thick skull. Most how to type videos are a pain to watch but I enjoy yours

  6. Cincinnatus, not trying to hijack the thread but your are the closest smith I've found so far and I just wanted to say hello. I'm located near Florence KY. Dry ridge actually but you may not be familiar with that town. I don't know anyone else involved with blacksmithing and as a beginner would appreciate any help or advice you would care to offer. Let me know if you ever get across the river into KY. Perhaps we could meet up and talk metal. Pm me anytime and sorry for being off topic.

  7. =Glenn II. I think that would only work If it was a single attacker. Also you would be surprised how angry you get when someone demands your hard earned lucre.

JHCC, in the last few days it's been in the 50's raining, sleeting, snowing temp down to zero now raining and 42

I think we may have been in the same weather system                    I'm about 40 or so miles south of Cincinnati

  8. JHCC, I knew the tuyere is considered a consumable. I'm starting with a 1 inch sch 40 pipe 24 inches long. So it can be advanced as it burns.                           Thanks. I haven't put the box together yet as the weather is unable to decide what season it is. I want to ask any questions before I start assembly. I know I can change anything I don't get right easily though. I'd prefer to get it right the first time if possible.

  9. Frosty, you are correct.  I think robbing me was an afterthought. The confrontation was gonna happen anyway.  I couldn't fight all of them but I focused on one of them.  I didn't know I was being stabbed until I seen the blade flash.  I thought I was just being punched, and not very hard punches at that.  I do know what you mean by tbi bringing your emotions close to the surface. Since my injury everyone tells me it changed my personality. I also deal with anxiety and hyper vigilance now. But I'm still here and trying to actively engage with life a little more.  After the motorcycle accident I kind of turned into a hermit and stopped participating in the world for a while. This last year I've been making an effort to.... Be again. Thanks for the encouraging words. I do a have a forge question though. I think the tuyere should be flush with the firepot and not sticking out of the dirt into the fire. I'm not misunderstanding that am I?  Thanks for helping. As soon as I the weather clears up I'm going to put it all together finally.
