  1. Thank you gentlemen ! While I would love to throw it back in the forge I’m a bit worried I went too far . I get a pic in the am . I bent it over pretty good in frustration. Thank you for all the help you guys are awesome! So much smarter for my next go at it ! Thank you all!
  2. That’s a great idea and your right very obvious ! Wish I would have known ! Lol now I just have to cut and grind a cutting edge on it now . I will use this tip next time for sure ! Thank you!
  3. Oh geez I don’t remember . 30-45 min I had the forge going good for a bit and had it sitting next to the fire .
  4. Thanks frosty ! That’s a lot of info and he hit the nail on the head so to speak about the hitting to hard . That’s exactly what happens . I’ll try again a little smarter this time . Lol thanks again! I’ll be looking up videos again for sure
  5. I’m using a break rotor forge and coal. I did try and move around the anvil and stoke in different directions trying to fix it but it ended up almost buckeling on me so I let it cool and stopped on it for the day .
  6. I Reid to make a hardy hot cut today our of a huge bolt I found . Didn’t end badly but I got a lot of work to do. But I had a problem with it wanting to bend in one direction as I as upsetting it . I tried to work it back and forth but it would barely move even when it was yellow . Any suggestions for my next attempt ?
  7. So I tried to forge weld for he second time today. I was feeling really good about it from the first pic but then on the second pic I was disappointed to see it coming apart . I tried to weld it 3 times and used a XXXXXX ton of borax . Still wouldn’t stick . So I decided to go with it and make something decorative . Can anyone give me any tips on what went wrong or why I couldn’t weld it back ? I had it sparkling and it just would stay . I grinder the metal where I tried to make the weld . Still wondering what went wrong .
  8. we’ll im trying to make tongs and wanted to do it like the videos . Not sure my terminology is correct but I wanted to punch a hole while it’s hot . So I can try my hand at that and riveting all in one project . I have a lot of rr knives but trying to do different things . Thank you Thomas for the quick response !
  9. I have some 1” rod of what I think is 5160 . Is this a good metal to use for punches or drifts ?
  10. Thank you guys ! I will be disassembaling those later today . I’m hoping to use the wheels to use on a hammer of some kind maybe a leaf spring hammer .
  11. So I got some garage springs today . I’m wondering if this is like all the spring metal I’ve heard about that you can make tools from. Is that the case with these . It’s not as thick as a coil spring from a car but I have a lot of it .
  12. Free is the big word for me right now . Lol cheap will work but free is......well free . Lol
  13. Good point . I’d like a variable speed motor but a waste gate or something similar would work too.
  14. Ok thanks ! I’ve worked on a lot of this type of fan . On a much larger scale . I’m talking like 3’ to 4’ in circumference . Have not yet got my hands on something I can use at home . I’m doing as much homework as I can on this as the smoke is really bad in my garage . Probably go this weekend and get something in . I was just really hoping to find something for free.
  15. So I forged a pair of tongs today . I found this metal and brought it home . They are on the left side of the pic. As I was hitting it to get the offset in I noticed it sparked green . What kind of metal am I dealing with? I don’t know how to even figure this out so I’m reaching out .
  16. Thanks guys I don’t have a good pic of the blower of my forge as it’s not exactly pretty . Lol I’m an electrician by trade so I made something work. Lol and it works but really ugly . Anyways yeah I haven’t had any luck finding coal in Northern Indiana except for Tractor supply co Everything I’ve read says to use bitimus . Well I know now that I can use anthracite . And it’s way cheaper at TSC. I wish I knew someone near me that blacksmiths and could point me in the right direction but I’m hoping to join the Indiana blacksmith association soon . Sounds like my air is really eating the coal and will have to get a new blower . Think I can find one for a decent price been eyeing some on graingers website . I’ll be back out there tomorrow . I had a request for bottle openers so I’m going to attempt that after I make a center punch hopefully .
  17. Hey everyone . I have recently started blacksmithing and made my own forge . I went and bought 50 lbs of coal off of eBay . It’s the bitimus coal or howerver you spell it . So I have had 3 fires in it . Today I had it going for about 4 hours . I’ve burned through 25 lbs in no time at all. I’m just wondering if this is normal or am I doing something wrong . My air is a make shift fan that I built but it’s not variable speed yet . So it kinda just blows constantly . While it gets real hot I’m going through what I think is too much coal . Any help or ideas will be appreciated !
  18. Got a good bit of hammering in today! Finally made something that looks like a knife !
  19. I like the way you think Thomas ! Lol that’s what I’m looking at trying to do! lol find it cheap and make it work !
  20. Nope not attached to the house . I’ll be checking the code either way . But am eyeing some 10” pipe . I assume I should get galvanized . So looking into that. Just got rid of some solar panels so I got a little cash to spend . So I’m looking into it . I think I can get some 8” for free . Would that work if I got a in line fan for it ?
  21. Well I was working at a heating and cooling place today . So I of course had to ask where I could get some duct work like they got . The nice guy said “ I’ve got some here how much do you need?” I’m thinking SCORE!!!! Well then he asked me what I was doing with it . I explained it was for a forge and going through my roof in my garage . He said that it had to be double walled pipe if it’s going through the roof . I assume that means it’s code here in my neck of the woods . That stuff is expensive ! Not sure code enforcement will make it to my house though. Lol
  22. I see that now ! Guess I will look for 10” . Where is the reference for how high I need to habe the chimney above my roof line ? I’m having trouble finding it .
  23. Oh I have all my buddies looking out for me too. Lol I have a small piece of I beam already . Need some legs though. I have lots of friends finding all kinds of things . It shouldn’t take long but just don’t have it yet
  24. No my ears are peeled literally every where I go now for scrap metal. Still trying to find a 8” chimney pipe and a blower motor . I’m an electrician so shouldn’t be hard to find
