i doubt it but i am a nnnnnoob (gasp ) it is probably a reapair over a crack. and a picture so people can help you better. and i think that the arm and hamer is a vulcan anvil.

i am not in iowa but here is what worked for me: look at a junk yard (found a 70lbs farrier in awful condition), look at the historical socety, look at friends houses, another junk yard, and old shops and businesses. i found a fisher norris anvil at a reapair shop built in the 1910's. good luck you might even find one in your basement

well i guess i am a little less impressed, but still that is a very nice knife. so just make sheets of brass as liners? that will be good to know for us newbies. heckuva job.

how long have you been playing at bladsmithing? my first knife could have been made out of playdough, so i am really impressed.

well i don't know much about them but i hear they work. i have a rr track that someone welded a plate on top and it works. rings like you would not belive. they are ok but a real anvil is always better. i would get one if it were my only option. although my new fisher norris is way better. :)

i would be careful. tresspassing and looting is a felony. try not to get caught. but it would make great anvils. you could have a working anvil and one for hot cutting or friends and another for something else. have fun and good luck.

that is another good idea. i can have a pic of the blade for this handle posted tomorrow at the earliest and probably the fineshed knife by thursday. thanks for the posts.

that beats most peoples first anvil, from what i hear. buy that puppy! anvils can be a pain to aqquire. get that thing. about a dollar a pound sounds like a good deal.

ok. i will heat the oil into the wood on a really low heat. i assume if i heat the oil it will light on fire. so heat till it smokes with my handle in it and i am done. this i think i can do, without burning down my neighborhood.

wow. the folks in your area invented something to stop rust? that is impressive, but there is always wd40 for us americans. how do you set up your smithy in a remote (ish) area? hope you like your rhino. they sound pretty awesome.

Philip in china: what if we don't have a welder or angle grinder (well i have an angle grinder just not the wheels for it)? can we keep all out tools? although some times you can work around it or you just like the current look.

hey actually can i boil veggie oil? i got a gallon to quench my knives and so forth. i think if i boil it into my wood i wil use that will work right? maybe i am wrong, but i will learn and it is going to be used to quench stuff so it does no matter if it is boiled, right? ok so i am not great with the whole oil thing. i just have to find my good old mineral oil! thanks for the ideas and help.

so.. i may end up getting me an old pick axe. thanks for the ideas.

dablacksmith: i do not compelteley agree with you on burnin the hole to big. i f you do it at a red heat then yes, but if do it lower at like 500 degrees. but yeah the hole can get to big. i often just glue it on too just to be safe. but i dont like too much glue. hide glue soounds pretty do able to me.

i have a ton of oak that i make charcoal in my forge as i go. it is not very hot, bit it is free and if you get small bits (like thumb thick, my thumb is about 1in across so it is my rule of thumb). this will burn off in about 4 min so constant feeding is needed but i can get orange-yellow heats. thought you might like that litle tid bit. lots of smoke though compared to charcoal.

actually i lied about the weight. i just guessed how heavy it was when i picked it up. there is a 1-8 on one side 180lbs! thanks for the posts and the hardy is 7/8ths! darn spacial perception! i also just remembered it is not in hundred weights but with the last number omited. i will weigh it asap for those of you who care about how heavy it is.

i do have access to a ton (by a ton i mean severel hundred gallons) beacause i know an auto repair shop owner. but i am not allowed to have motor oil in the yard. gettin veggie oil is pushing it. i got a gallon for $6.88 (with tax). not cheap (to me) but i can use it for more than just a quenchant. thanks for the posts!
