I would definitely test it under load just after it warms up a little.  I doubt that the fuel in the oil is a one time thing.  Why would it happen one time.  You mention gas.  I thought Onan's were mostly diesel types? If it is gas, then it might be the carburetor.  Good luck.   

There is nothing like a new toy.  Practice welding all kinds of welds for fun.  Learn about your machine.  Tig welding is so cool.

By chance Mr. Basher did you see the show called "Big Giant Swords".  I 'm interested in your take of his so called sword making and the discussion that followed here on IForgeIron under Swordsmanship?

I saw the episode with the Chakram and was really disappointed.  It's fabrication not swordsmanship. I understand that the customer wanted the lightning bolt for show and tell at his school, but any hobbyist welder could have done the same.  I think this is where the lines get blurred between fabrication and blacksmithing for the general public.  To me he is not a craftsman.  I'm sure others would disagree.  With modern equipment, and minimal skills he is able to fool many people.  I would like to hear from Mr Basher from the UK on his take of the show.     

I'd love to see a picture/s of the tools/punches/slitters/ used to make all those holes/slots.   Excellent work.  

I would think combining Charles and Glenn's two methods might be best.  Anneal it and then drill it, but if that doesn't work, I'm with Glenn and purchase the best material suited for power hammer abuse.  

One of the problems I see is my Thermal Arc AC/DC Inverter is 15 years old.  It has been a great Tig machine for me but I can't vouch for their new models.  I would suggest contacting a welding school and see what types of machines they have and how they hold up.  A company that has been around for some time indicates they most likely make quality machines, not like the chinese made kind. Good luck in your search.

January 13, 2015, Discovery channel will air a series called "Big Giant Swords"  I'm not sure how good it will be, but it should be interesting.

Basher:  If you ever travel to Southern Cal, we have a school that can handle 10 students at Adam's Forge.  Give us some advanced notice and I will try my hardest to make it happen.  

What about providing a diagram of your hookah.  I'm not really familiar with them.  I find it interesting that smokers are concerned with putting toxic substances into their lungs. I guess copper, glycerin, nicotine, and flavorings aren't considered toxic when heated.  (Soapbox done:) If your going to do this, then I guess it's best to be as safe and non-toxic as possible.  

Unbelievable!  All those different types of swords in one class.  Can you come to Southern California?  I have never seen a sword class here.  The best we could get was a letter opener.  

Fascinating, I must admit there is a place for wood.   

Keep the colors.  They make the piece even more unique. You discovered a technique that can be used for other pieces.  Very, very nice work.

Try some JB weld or some really strong glue for metal.  They are surprisingly strong.  Good luck

I have seen this several times and still enjoy watching it again and again.  Sad.  

Industrial Metal Supplies, or similar type metal supplier, has hollow metal balls the size of shotputs.  I've seen them come in halves that join together nicely.  Easier to weld to than a real solid shotput.
