  1. Pouring an anvil soon as I found an old pattern in my foundry. Weight will be between 85 and 100 lbs and will be poured out of H13 tool steel. Should the hardie hole on an anvil that size be 3/4 or 1 inch? Should the hole have a taper or a straight square through the part. I need to build a corebox this week and would appreciate any opinions.

Welcome aboard Greg, glad to have you! If you'll put your general location in the header you'll find out how many of the gang live within visiting distance. We're blacksmiths and general metal heads we aren't going to remember you mentioning it in one post once we open another.

Yes, there are H13 anvils being cast and they make fine anvils. I can't recall the maker though I'm sure someone will chime in soon. I take it you're set up for heat treating that much mass. Yes?

75 lbs. is a good size especially for a portable operation anything under 150 lbs. is a reasonably manageable weight. The 200+ lb. range is usually a shop anvil that doesn't get moved around much. Are you thinking about starting a line? Give me a shout if you need a catchy name, I'm pretty good at catchy names. :)

Frosty, i hope the name and picture change works!

  3. Thomas, as I may have mentioned i found a Mahogany pattern in a back room, dusted it off and plan on pouring a few as I have had several requests as of late. I pour 5 to 10 tons of H13 castings a month and this is the perfect size for Xtra metal I often have in my 1 ton heats. The price of $8 per lb that most anvils are listed at makes it an attractive product idea. If I can keep the part under 75 lbs i can also ship it on UPS instead of truck. I will know the weight after I pour a sample next week. I will post a pic of the pattern and casting soon.

  4. My name is Greg and i own a steel foundry in Michigan, Holland Alloys. One of my tool makers made an anvil pattern and wants me to cast him one. I pour a lot of H13 tool steel as well as other steels. Does anyone make an H13 tool steel anvil and would this work well? We would machine the face and bottom then send out to be hardened. I would like to see a Rc 50 to 53 which is common. This tool should way around 75 lbs. I am also having my CAD guy draw up a jewelers anvil, maybe 10 lbs but i do not know that we need the same hardness.

Any comments on material and hardness would be appreciated.
