  1. Thanks Biggundoctor. Maybe I can find a piece of railroad track to cut up.
  2. Hi; I am working on a hydraulic press and was wondering if the dies should be hardened steel or can any steel I can find work. I' am leaning towards hardened steel but not really sure. Appreciate ant advice. Thanks. Grinder
  3. I' am realizing now from the responses that there is a lot of pressure in the tank that has to be controlled. I was figuring that I needed to tune the burner to make all that pressure into a stronger flame and heat up the material that much faster. I guess it is what it is. Thanks for all the help. Getting a better grasp on how its supposed to work.
  4. The forge is 18" deep, the width is 10" and the kayo wool is 2.5 " thick. I do have a regulator but no pressure gauge yet. I have played with the regulator to try and adjust the flame but was only able to slow it down. In all the pictures, its the same forge. The burner pipe is 3/4" to a 3/4 x1.5 " reducer end. I tried the adjust the burners up and down to see if it would make a difference but it didn't do very much. The only success I had was leaving the front and back doors open.
  5. Hi Guys: Thanks for the replies. Good information. I just thought it would be cheaper to run natural gas than propane. My problem is when I try to open the ball valve more after the forge is running, the added pressure will snuff out the flame. Maybe its because I'am a rookie, and am not supposed to open it fully. Not sure. The tank 80 lb. is old and the propane is several years old too. I'll post a few pics so you can see what I have now.
  6. Hi Brothers: I've been having a few problems with my forge and tried some advice from this site to no avail. Wanted to tune my burners a little but when I try to turn up the pressure, it snufs the flame out. My 80 lb. tank is almost empty now and I know its a old tank that sat for several years. I was thinking of running a natural gas line to my shop instead of using propane. I haven' t heard much about natural gas forges so not sure if it will solve any of the problems or just create more. Whats your opinion on the switch. Thanks.

  8. I have a two burner forge, and two welded nipples that the burner tube goes through. Th nipples are welder solid all the way around. There are three set screws that hold the tubes in place. Its a snug fit. Should I maybe drill a small hole beside the nipple to allow secondary air to enter the forge. Trying to grasp what you mean.
  9. Hi : I just started earlier this year heating things up just to test the burners and see what colour is right to forge weld. My first attempt failed . Didn't leave it in long enough. Since then, I made a pretty good tomahawk, and managed to forge weld a piece of motorcycle chain onto a billet and folded it once into another billet. I found that my back burner seemed to work much better than the front one. Here are a couple of pics. Is it possible that I have too much pressure in the tank so when I open the valve too much, it blows itself out? I have been reading all the replies and I have to say as a rookey, I have a hard time keeping up and understanding some of the conversation. I think I' am in good company anyway. Much appreciated for the help. As for tools, i have my two burner forge, a couple of anvils and a few tongs. Definitely would like to build a hydraulic press. I don't have the pipes like I used to. Lol.
  10. Hey: Thanks for the interest. I just bought two new gas shut off valves, and hoe that will help. Apparently, i was using regular water ball valves. Not sure if it will make a difference. Hope to get it back together this weekend. I've been reading a number of post regarding burners and it seems there is a lot more to this than I originally thought. Tri tri again. Will repost with my results. soon.
  11. Hi Mikey: I' am new here and just getting into forging. I built a gas forge this summer and have been practicing forge welding. Even made an attempt at damascus. I wonder if you can help with a problem with my forge. It is a duel burner, and for some reason after I light the front burner and turn up the valve, it's like its blowing itself out. There's no more blue flame. I try to adjust the air inlet with no luck. I seem to have good pressure but maybe too much. I put a .30 mig tip in but it doesn't help either. The back burner works better for some reason. The two burners are exactly the same. My hose line is one into two. I 'd like to read your book on this subject if I can find it. Thanks in advance. Grinder
