  1. So been asking questions lately trying to sort out the best forge for a first timer and this is what I came up with. Started off with this, and at the advice of the members here came to the conclusion it will be too big and need two burners. Also the fact i can probably only work a couple inches of steel at a time. was 24inches long and I cut it down to 12" Just fired the silica ridgidizer tonight, seemed to go well its got 2 one inch layers of 2600 degree ceramic wool. and then once I have the kast o lite from wayne it will get approx 1/2" coating of that then metrikote. I'm not sure about the burner though, I kind of used my own design which might have been a mistake.......picture is it running at 15 psi. i'm figuring this is going to be a fuel hog? Also i'm thinking the burner flare is probably sticking into the forge too much ( 1.5"), risk it melting as its only brass.
  2. now are you supposed to heat the kast o lite or dry it slowly in a high humidity environment?
  3. OK, that makes sense. Cant wait to get all the materials and get it together. will keep ya'll updated. many thanks
  4. actually got it from wayne on the board here, he will ship it up to Canada. shipping is expensive but i got 2 pints of metrikote and 10lb of kast o lite for 160 CAD shipped. the single pint of ITC was that much almost.
  5. So have both of these on order, I can return the itc-100 but was wondering if there would be any added benefit to doing a itc wash over the metrikote. so this order 2" ceramic fiber, both rigidized then .5" kast o lite then metrikote with a wash of itc every once in a while to keep the IR reflectivity up? or is that just a complete waste of money. also how much added benefit is there from the 1/2" of kast o lite.......metrikote say to put it straight on the kaowool.
  6. what kind of temps are we looking for, for that to happen?
  7. not to hi jack the thread, but i thought you just dry it with a light bulb or something then apply the kast-o lite? Whats the proper way to do it?
  8. ordered the proper stuff from Wayne , want to do it right the first time.
  9. no haven't got that far yet so I can switch it up. thanks
  10. Building my first forge and see on here the go to type of coating over ceramic fibre is kastolite-30. I ended up ordering this https://www.psh.ca/index.php?item_id=RMOR3 thinking it will work fine as a 1/2" layer over 2" of ridigized ceramic wool. but now I'm getting the impression that castable and refractory mortar have different uses? so what do you guys think, will this product work or is it not even worth using? many thanks
  11. really appreciate the pointers, its nice to have some feedback as i'm kinda just doing educated guesses. regarding #3 the burner is secure via the 3/4 stainless coupler and a 1 inch brass collar over the 3/4 inch mixing tube.....sort of a thru hull adapter style. also there is going to be 2" of ceramic wool which then will be covered with 1/4-1/2" Vesuvius super 300 cement. then washes of some type of infrared reflective type coating, maybe itc-100 or something else....hard to get in Canada. About how far should they burner flare protrude from the ceramic wool/cement? I Will make the other adjustments and report back. thanks again, Jake from Vancouver island
  12. hey just put together this burner and being the first one ive made im not sure if its any good. was wondering if anyone could analyze the flame and give me some pointers maybe? thanks IMG_0081.MOV
