  1. This is one I made. Dad gave me an old (probably antique) belt sander and the rest is scap I had laying around.
  2. Thanks everyone for all the information, I really appreciate it. I do apologize for not not doing research before asking though
  3. What does claying the fire pan mean?
  4. “Scientific MFGD by FOOS MFG CO Springfield Ohio” is what it says
  5. Thanks for the fast response. I haven’t seen it in person yet. It looks like a benchtop. The crank turns but it looks like it’s missing a belt to the blower. He said he will clean it up a little and check it out. He just pulled it out of the barn.
  6. A friend of mine has an old forge that was his grandfathers and he asked if I was interested in it. I would like to get it but I want to give him a fair price for it. Any idea what it’s worth? I don’t know the manufacturer yet. He is going to see if he can find anything on it. Thanks
  7. Thats hot, that is a good idea for the flapper. I was trying to figure out how to engineer one lol. I did read that 10 to 12 inch pipe is best. If I change it it's just a few pop rivets
  8. Thanks for the reply. I thought about a flapper cap, how often does it need to be emptied? The thin sheet I put over the tuyere was just because the coal I have has a lot of small pieces if it's not necessary I won't use it. It's an 8 inch chimney. Hopefully it's good coal. I got a 55 gallon drum of it (bituminous)
  9. It is for coal. I can get bulk coal about 15 minutes from me. Thanks I'll have to check out the conference.
  10. I'm building my first forge and would appreciate any input on what I have so far. I'm just getting into blacksmithing and I don't even know what I'm going to be making yet. For now it is portable and will be used outside. If it works well and I get into it more I may make it permanent.
  11. I will give an update soon hopefully. My forge is mostly complete but I'd like to post some pictures to get some feedback on things that I may need to change. I'm new to this site, where should I post them?
  12. I just got some bituminous locally for about 14 cents a pound. I haven't tried it yet as I'm still building my forge. I live in northern Indiana if anyone needs to find some bulk coal let me know
  13. I'm just getting into blacksmithing and found this forum. Looks like great information. I've always liked metal fab and recently made a knife from a wrench. I enjoyed that and wanted to try more so I'll be building a forge soon.
