  1. Thanks for the kind words fellas. Thanks Thomas for the input, i figured somethin strong cause they didnt wanna move easily. i was thinkin maybe tool steel of some sort but it is a mystery steel for now. We just finished a 25000 ft well in PA. trippin out as i type. I've been on a couple rigs like that back when I was still offshore, years ago... thanks roastbeef for the compliment. Slag, the bourbon was for me.... hahahaa. everytime I fly back home, i take an extra suitcase to bootleg whiskey & food back to the land of mostly bland yankee food.
  2. Hello all, I figured i have lurked around long enough and wanted to share what i made for my nephew & his bride for thier wedding gift... i figured i would make bracelets and matching pendants... I forged these on my 1 day off the day before i flew back to houston for the wedding. luckily my brother in law had a few tools layin around for me to finish em up with. for his bracelet i used 1/2" sq taken down to 1/4" throw in a couple twists and ........ i screwed up on one end of it, but i guess it adds character..... for hers i used a small piece of steel cable that i did not weld completely (on purpose) to show more of the texture from the cable. I had to coat hers with some thick clear epoxy to keep any sharp bits from snaggin clothes & skin, everything else got a shot of rustoleum clear coat. for the pendants i used some slip dies that i had layin around for a while now and wanted to see if they could be forged.... good news, they can, but it was it tough... i melted the first one, but the second one i got enough for 3 pendants out of. if i ever make another pendant, it will be mild steel or something easier to work. Please let me know what y'all think, good bad or indifferent, all input is appreciated. I guess its time for the pics, hey Mr ThomasPowers, if you happen to see this, i am curious if you know what material slip dies are made from? I noticed in a couple other posts you have an oilfield background as well. Just curious.
  3. Thanks for the help, was curious if there is any mention as to a date in the book? I have searched the web looking for Loma Froming & Co and every variant of anything anvil related, and I only get results about hair cream or some other randomness. I'm still gonna beat on it, but curious as to how old it might be.
  4. Thanks frosty, although I like commercial strippers, i think I will go with a wire wheel in the grinder. I would use a flapper wheel if there is any major marks, but that would be worst case scenario. I ate enough lead paint chips as a kid and I turned out ok, a little more can't hurt... I figured you would have suggested plywood instead of grass or leaves..... there is a couple good jokes in that, but I will keep it clean, haha. Don't worry, PPE is an all day everyday thing for me, second nature.
  5. Here is a couple more pics of the anvil. I know I gotta get the paint off it and hit it with a wire brush still. Long days and not enoug time. What is a good way to strip the paint? Just hit it with the wire wheel until clean?
  6. Thanks frosty, started with a few knives, and tried a bracelet, but that was a no go. Gonna start making a few hooks to keep practicing with. Need more hammer time & cant wait to try out an actual anvil.
  7. Howdy fella's and gals, been lurking on this site for a few months now and finally decided that it was time to join. I'm lookin for a lil help from y'alls vast knowledge on anvils. I finally found an anvil at a decent price on craigslist by accident. Now i can re purpose my rr track. I picked this up from a guy near pittsburgh pa. I know it was made in Sheffield and weighs 135# but doesn't look like a mouse hole anvil. I looked at all the posts about the Armitage era and markings, but cant say it matches any of that info. I've had this thing for a week now, and all I have had time to do is take this quick pic of it, (workin 15 hr days). Still need to clean all the paint off it. It has decent rebound and ring, there is a chip off the corner of the heel, but doesn't affect the rebound right next to the chip, (i'll post more pics tonight when i get home). Any help would be appreiciated.
