basically i am just into random pattern for now. the press is about 20 ton. movement is on the slow side. thanks for info lee

I am making drawing dies for a press to draw out billets to make damascus steel for knife blades. what knid of radius do i need to do this? I am thinking about using a 2 in shaft split for each half of the set of dies. Any help with this w ould be appericated. Leroyk

what we call damascus steel was first made in the city of damscus don't know if it was in syria or not bt it was 5000 years ago

high guys: i am building a gas forge for welding damacsus billets. It is about 9 in high and square and about 18 in long. It has an angle iron frame. I will hold it together with threaded rod. My? is this, will expansion of the bricks be a problem? Maybe i should spring load the rods holding it together. I will appericate and info you can give me. Thianks, Leroyk

hey ted i went yesterday by my frien with forge and hammer and played for about 5 hrs i made t wo billets one about240 layers and theo other oneabout 60 in the latter i put three peices of a damacsus shot gutn barrel and some 15n20 a little pure nickel and some 1095 havn't had a chance to clean up to tell if i got a weld or not will let you know when i clean it up lee

i an ging to build a press but my pump only puts out 1500 psi. Maybe a 6 in would be large enough but if i build it i want to be sure to have enouower lee

I guess what i meant was a 6 or 8 in diamiter cyl leroy

if you are going to grind knife blades you will neec a larger pulley on the motor to give you some more clearen ce awa from motor leroy

I am thinking abou building one too.I never thought about air over hydraluic pump with about a 5 hp motor. don't know if it will be powerful enough or fast enough' the few times i have tried making a billet i used a friends forge and power h amer. I h ad fair sucess the last billet i made, I added some 15n20 and pure nickel to wood band saw b lades and metal band saw blades. Also some 1095 the peices range from .030 to .050 I stack about 40 layers. It is about 2" thick. and abou 6" long. Do you think this would weld on your air over press. Any info you can give will be greatly apperciated , Leroyk

Ted t thanks for all the good imfo. am sure it will help mw a lot. this past winter another blacksmith let me use his forge and power hammer. In three trys I had a moderate sucess, one failure and one really good damacus billet. I had been wanting to try this for over five and finnaly got t he chance. However I do not want to wear out my welcome so I am going to build my own forge an am t hinking of building a hydraliuc p ress for welding my billets. do you think it will work?
