Another Quad-State someone had a big ammo crate of stuff with $5 choice on it; I dug down to the bottom and found a bunch of Lynch Collection hammer heads; I actually told the person these were misplaced; but he said no---so I bought 11 of them.

I have heard you mention this story often, but after googeling them and looking on ebay, I have come up with no results on what a hammer like this looks like or why they are special. could you point me in the right direction to find information on them or a picture.

  2. I cant seem to find the video, but a while back it was either C1toolsteel or Tubalcian2 that posted a video of him hititng the horn of one of those anvils and busting it off...just sayin

I will have to pick up a scotch brite disc, I have never used one. is there different "grits"? if so what would you recommend Gergely?

Thanks! I eventually got in a groove with directing. after punching, things went smoother haha.

as promised pictures of the hammer we made, and also pictures of the Damascus one from a while back. Also took some pictures of a trivet I made, jlpservicesinc what do you think? your the person to ask on this sorta work, almost afraid of the answer yours are so good haha. also, inspired by JustAnotherBiker I tried my hand at a guitar bottle opener. Whent alright, other than that it doesn't really work...I need to make the lip a little large I think, but other than that things went not half bad.

Well, not sure why that picture of me the Damascus hammer is at the top, and sorry for the pictures of the stainless hammer being upside down.

  4. JAB- You are doing well and progressing nicely. Good pair of first tongs, much better than mine! mine took about 4 tries before I got a functional pair, almost all for the same reason it took you more than one try. nice hook too.

Bounty forge- Was a pleasure striking for you! you did a good job striking for me too. Both hammers turned out very nice! mine weighs in at about 1 5/8" lb, Pictures will come up tomorrow.Next time we will have to try out a ball pein. After you left I used a (brand new) wire wheel on an angle grinder to see if it would shine up any and it didn't really. I will have to see what else I can do to shine it up, but still leave the forging marks in (so not really any grinding) . any ideas anyone?

  5. nice hammers, now get some oil on those handles!

                                                                                                                                            Littleblacksmith

Thanks Mark. The farrier style rounding hammer was my goal, glad you picked up on that. The tongs worked like a dream but I wish someone had told me that there’s a learning curve to using them. After a while I got the hang of it and things started going more smoothly.

Yes, they take some time to get used to. I found also that it helps if you hold them about an inch or so behind the boss, don't try holding them at the end of the reins, you wont have enough control.

Very nice tongs!! you have progressed very quickly.

                                                                                                                                                            Littleblacksmith

  7. haha! I used to live in the Hutto/Roundrock area (sorta near Austin) and so when we moved to College Station, it was kinda weird. you just let me know if you are ever near here and want to stop by, we also sell blacksmithing coke if you are in need of some.

                                                                                                                               Littleblacksmith

  8. Oh and Das, how did the grinding you did on them blend in? I remember that to get a good ground you ground a part of them down shiny and attached the clamp, is that area noticeable that it was ground?

                                                                                                                                                     Littleblacksmith

Finally got around to forging a pair rounding hammers. A buddy of mine struck for me so he gets to keep one of the inaugural pair. They’re a far cry from Mark’s Damascus cross pein but hey, he’s better than I am.

Very nice hammers! remind me of a farrier pattern I like it with the narrower fuller than most, gives it a nice look. How'd the tongs work?

JAB- nicely done, I knew exactly what it was when  looked at it! I may have also punched halfway through for the hole in the guitar (I know, ya'll who pick are gonna be ashamed of my terminology...) and also would have used a chisel and put some strings in. good job for a first go at the idea.

                                                                                                                                            Littleblacksmith

  10. Man, can't imagine what that would be like. Praying for ya'll.

                                                                                                                                                     Littleblacksmith

  11. I do a similar thing with coke, when having lunch I stick a piece of firewood in there about 3-4" thick to keep it going.

                                                                                                                                                   littleblacksmith

  12. funny thing was, while I was reading Mr. Power's post I couldn't help but look down and read JHCC's squirrel in all caps, bolded, and underlined! haha

                                                                                                                                                     Littleblacksmith

  13. wow, I like those alot! when electolisysing I had always just left them a black, I like the silver! looks like I'll have to haul some of the wrought iron out of my scrap pile and into the tank! I bet ya people would buy those as is.

                                                                                                                                                            Littleblacksmith

  14. Welcome from a fellow Texan! if ever in my neck of the woods give me a holler!

                                                                                                                                           Littleblacksmith

  15. wow, you are off to a great start! and sometimes I will say this to encourage someone who needs encouragement, but I mean it, your s-hooks and everything else look great for a beginner, and even for someone a few months in or more! love to see how you are doing a year from now, keep it up.

                                                                                                                                                    Littleblacksmith

  16. This doesn't really have anything to do with the current conversation but also, others may argue with me on this, but, I have found in my limited experience with cable (have only made about 10 or so things with it) that it is easier to weld it square, or rectangular. What I mean is, that rather than rolling it while you hit it, to just hit it from 4 sides. I have even tried welding it in a swage block and didn't have success, and people swear that you gotta weld in a swage block, now it may have just been my technique, but when I went to hitting it on 4 sides like I had always done it went just fine.

                                                                                                                                                    Littleblacksmith

  17. Oh you'll be sure to see it when it is done!

I have also thought about a charred hickorry handle, just a dark handle that would compliment the hammer nice. I should post a picture of a small rounding hammer I recently made that I did a charred octagonal handle for, I like it all right.

                                                                                                                                        Littleblacksmith
