  1. yesterday i went to mister Carrol's shop to get an idea of how i want to set up my shop and to take a look at his power hammer. well to make a long story short he ended firing up the forge and we did some forging with the power, it was fun i enjoyed my self i think he did as well. ill get a video up as soon as i can. glad i finally got meet mister Carrol he's nice man and a great blacksmith.

  2. i was just kidding i should have been more specific. when i come to you asking me about the clinker breaker and such i dont know what you mean. when it comes to coal size i know some one who's giving it to me for free (they bought a farm and a random pile of coal on it), the sizes very a lot, most around the size of a soccer ball (or foot ball in other country's) and dont get smaller then a base ball. i generally break it down a lot. and frosty no i was not trying to bait the curmudgeons.

    thanks, Ethan.

  3. hello, thank you all. sorry i took me so long to get a reply, so for some odd reason me and my dad thought that the 1/4 inch holes were to large so after reading these reply's i changed it back to 1/4 inch and it works fine. thank you all (even the curmudgeon :) )

  4. so i just got an old coal forge up and running, and i dont know what size holes the grate in the bottom needs. first i tried a really big holes about 1/4 inch, and then all the hot coals fell through and into the clinker breaker. then i tried small holes about 1/16 inch and that just keeps clogging. so i just wanted to so if any of people have had this problem you can help me out.

    Thanks, Ethan.

They are WAY out of the hot zone and will not cause problem in that build---and I am one of the most strident warners about galv as I lost a good friend to it!

im sorry about your friend, i dont know much about that sort of stuff. but if i see any ting galv i try to warn people that might not know because of incidents such as your friend. ( im sorry about your friend and hope i did not offend you).

    Ethan.

  6. hey in pic all the way at the bottom, are those galvanized pipes i see. if they are make that change and no matter what do not use galvanized pipes in any forge ever! (sorry if you already know this)

  7. Portland cement dosnt make a good refractory, heat breaks it down (thats how they make it in the first place) alumina based cements are refractory. A tub of stove cement and vermiculite work, add water to make the cement thin enugh to coat the vermiculite, then paint with a couple of coats of plane stove cement.

The problem is that any cement (or clay for that matter) will trap moisture under it and when combined with costics such as ash and cement it will rust the pan out. Sand and ash will to but they dry out must faster.

Lining it with adobe is fast and cheap if you want a liner, and a heck of a lot easer to remove later.

thanks, were can i get adobe clay? do they sell it at hard were stores?

  8. Value is relative to the person/place. if it's worth it to you then it is. i would pay that without blinking an eye, fix it up and use it no problem. they do pop up around me from time to time but usually go for a little more/same in incomplete shape, or alot more in better shape. If the screw is good, and the jaws look pretty good to me, fix it up and use it. it'll last you many years. whats that worth?

ya i know i just wanted to ask him so i could prove that it is worth it.

  9. Ok, looks like the mount is broken, no problem, ither forge a new one or have your welder budy weld on a peice you can curve and punch/drill. And ad a leg to bring he up to about 40" (the bracket bolts to a 36" bench) looks like the spring is intact.

the spring is intact but when i tighten it down and then loosen it i have to pull it back manually.

Spring didn't look broken, looks like the bolt plate is broken and that can be fixed.

Do yourself a favor and unwind the handle and check the threads on the screw. How do they look?

Jaws look pretty good in my opinion.

i checked the threads be fore i got it they look great.

  10. I just got a good deal an an old broken leg vise, it is still in working condition except the spring is broken and the leg is snapped in half but i know some one who could weld that right up, i got it for $25 and its the biggest vice Ive seen with 5inch jaws and it weighs probably 45#. did i waste my money? i will upload some pics if you guys want.
