  1. Well thanks a lot Jim...I thought my blower was a good setup...Lol

Charles...I may take on your idea of taking the pipe to the floor and making a side-blast...Good idea!!!!

I was thinking of welding in a diverter plate in the top of the drum to increase the draw? Didn't know if this would work? Side blasting may be much better...(Charles's thoughts)

    Thanks guys!

  2. This is my work in progress traveling barrel forge...need to finish the tuyere & mount the  brake drum / leg straps etc.                                                                                                                     I can't decide what to vent the top of the barrel with pipe wise...Black 8"pipe? This will be sitting outside and burning charcoal & coal.

So what do you think? Will this work? Should I keep the pipe to the back of the barrel so it's offset from the fire pot or should I vent it directly over the firepot?                                           Once I get this up & going it will be my first time forging...so excited!

    Thanks...Bruce

  3. Hi everybody.

Just wondering if anyone has ever used the Sumac plant for dying steel?

I used to dye my traps in this (Boiling water & Sumac berries)...It will dye rusty steel to a black color.

The rustier the steel the better the dye job. (This holds up great one a good deep color is achieved)

Thinking of trying this on some forged pieces here in the very near future.

Just wondering what you all think or if anyone has tried this?

    Thanks...Bruce

  4. Try 2-3 layers of ice shield that they put in roof valleys and under starter shingles.

A layered piece on each side (1/2 the size of your hand) of the anvil and the ringing will disappear or go to a car audio shop and try some of the silencing material they put in the trunk of cars.  (Boom boxes on wheels...LOL)

  5. So workability is what makes an anvil...Totally makes since. I'll have to see if i can measure my bounce / rebound height. (Appears good / fair from what I know)

I was astonded to find out this anvil is more than 150 years old.

Thanks for all the help / info...This is a very informative site!

  6. Arkie...I will follow your advice...Sounds very interesting! Looking forward to it...Thanks a bunch!

Falsevacuum...Your advice is helpful to me...Thanks for replying. And I would be in the same boat as you...$160.00 anvil versus a $16,000.00 anvil...My begininer butt wouldnt notice...I just wanna swing and make thunder! LOL Thanks again!

JHCC...I had no idea of age...WOW! Who would have ever guessed? With my skill level being around a #1 im gonna rack up a list of problems...LOL Thank you for your helpful information!
