    First fire

Hey guys. I recently completed my first propane forge build and wanted to share with you some pictures and videos. http://imgur.com/a/8VSeH Went with a standard propane tank (US). Chopped a few holes here and there and lined it with 2" worth of kaowool which was then covered by a few coats of ITC-100. Hard fire brick for the floor. Chamber volume 6" x 10" ~ 280 cu in. Burner: 1" Tee burner with a custom machined jet assembly. I was able to dick around using it, heating up stock and what not, but I noticed I was only getting a good red to orange heat on the stock. This was the first fire and, if you read my post about the burner, I probably need to tune and tweek this a little to get more efficiency. Then again, I could have just been impatient and not leaving the stock in there long enough. With that said though, the burner did operate much better once installed into the forge. This is referring to my previous post with questions regarding the burner and how it sounded. I like how it came out, especially for this being my first run at it. Over the next few weeks I hope to adjust things here and there to improve it. Hurray prototyping! C&C welcome!
  2. Hey guys, Last night I finished fabricating my first forger burner. I decided to go with Frosty's T burner mostly because of ease of fabrication and cost of parts (I can always go back and try something else so why not go with the cheap and easy first :P). https://youtu.be/Axr3Ri0T2iw http://imgur.com/a/NnpxG Before I move forward with the final stages of my forge build I wanted to run this by you guys and see what you think. It looks to me, based on the few videos Ive seen of other T burners in action, that it works fine. Good enough for use in the forge. If anything I'm a little concerned that it might be too powerful, but I need to do another volume measurement of my forge chamber before I can entertain that idea. some specs: 1" x 8" pipe nozzle 1" x 1" x 1" pipe tee 5/8" hand machined brass fitting 3/8" hand machined brass jet with 0.045" orifice Thoughts?
  3. So I'm working on a propane forge build and I havent decided yet on the burner to use. I am familiar with some of the various designs out there on the net (EZ, sidearm, T Rex, Mongo, Guru, T-Bird), but I'm curious what you guys think. I'd like to try building one first before having to shell out the cash to buy one. I've seen the designs for the EZ but I've heard people say its an outdated design and others out perform it. What about the T-bird? http://anvilsandinkstudios.com/burner.html It seems the T-bird might be a good choice (based on some things I've read), but the design is for a 3/4" burner. Does it scale up to 1"? My forge design is based on a standard grill propane tank so I estimate my forge chamber volume to be ~500 cu in, suggesting 3/4" burners to be insufficient. So what do you guys think? Whats a decent choice for a venturi burner that I can build in the shop of sufficient size for a 500 cu in forge? Kek.
  4. Hey guys! (First post! :D) I got bit by the blacksmith bug and set out to gather the stuff needed to play with hot metal in my backyard. First up the anvil! (Cue Zelda's acquired sound). http://imgur.com/a/aFGoK I found this anvil off of ebay for a steel. The seller claimed it was 180 lbs. The seller also claimed it was steel, but my hammer test suggests a steel face with an iron body (which would make sense?). Picked it up for $150, cant beat <$1/lb. After brushing off years of rust I was able to make out her maker's mark as well as other markings. Hill. Some internet research makes me strongly think she is a Hill Birmingham, although while the Hill is clearly visible the Birmingham is not. However, the similar font and other symbols elsewhere on the anvil as well as the general style of the anvil matches with other Hills I've seen online. I was also able to make out the hundredweight mark, 188 lbs (the second digit is heavily faded and can be made out only with the right shading so it didnt come out well in a picture). Some heavy wire brushing then a coat of linseed oil to stop the rust before I get a chance to use her and she's ready for the shop. I'm curious. Various internet searches show other Hills being late 1700s, early 1800s. Anyone got a clue about mine? I noticed that my anvil has a pair of pritchel holes, one larger than the other. I got the feeling from somewhere that that feature is more common on later anvils than earlier ones? I'm also curious about the mark on the front legs. 1T. Thoughts? Perhaps another weight mark? Or a mark denoting the model of anvil? Kek
