  1. I cannot say I am pro union. However I find it ironic that there is a group of blacksmiths here trying to LOWER blacksmithing wages.

I don't think this is a matter of trying to lower blacksmiths wages, but being paid appropriately for the job at hand. This is a museum with live demonstrations for the public and I believe is seasonal. It is hard to justfy the $25.00 to $30.00hr. plus benefits and it could be more because I do not know what the prevailing wage is in Michigan now. I personaly have worked for two unions and understand the purpose they serve but at some point common sense must prevail. In Mackinaw City MI there is a blacksmith shop at the fort and the Benjamin House shop on the Island which is run by the parks service. They pay $10.00hr and have smiths working there.

  2. They don't compete with them but Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford museum is owned by Ford. Some how the UAW got their hands into it and decided the blacksmiths would be union workers and would get UAW wages. Greenfield Village said I don't think so and let the blacksmiths go. The only way they would ever get blacksmiths back if the UAW decided to reverse their decision. This information I heard from some blacksmiths from Ohio that has worked there at one time or another. I'm only repeating what I have been told if I am wrong feel free to correct me.

WOW!! :o:blink::angry: Thanks for that info. It just makes you wonder doesn't it?
  3. This is a sad thing. :( Thanks for sharing your photos. They bring fond memories back for me. I have been there many times as a child, taking school field trips and with my father. I have spent lots of time watching the smiths work there. I can remember my dad having to pull me out of there to look at other things. They use to make horse shoe nail rings and they had a box and handed them out to all the kids. Now after thinking about it this was my first exposure to blacksmithing and probably set the seed for where I am today.

Maybe someone from the MABA will chime in and tell us what has happen there? Hopefully it is just a budget problem, or not being able to find a smith to run it.

  4. Not sure if you are joking or not HW ... I mean I like forging, but drawing a cube down is not really "crafty"...now if you are referring to the video/editing then thank you..it is not something I like to do nor feel I have any aptitude for.
I use a Sony DSC-TX7 camera which has more features than I care to know about and can be completely hidden in my hand like a deck of cards. I am muddling through the IMovie features on my MAC....I never imagined technology would get so...well..techie.

No I am not joking! I really like your sword and there is much more than just drawing out a blank. You really do nice work.
  5. Bryce, I was in Santa Fe on June 16th and met Helmut in his shop and actually seen the fence you helped with. It is very nice job and more impresive in person. I went there because I am very interested in the hydraulic forging press he built and the slitting and drifting dies he has for it. It just so happened he was slitting and drifting the 1 3/4" rebar then upsetting the ends while I was there. He is a very nice man and you are very lucky to be able to work with somone of his skill. ;)

  6. You know I love tools and machines but I sometimes feel like my love of this stuff is more of a curse.... At the moment its just me and my son Andrew working at the shop, so trying to keep everything clean and running is just about a full time job.... I like working on machinery but it almost always cost money to do so and takes time away from paying work....

I actually have got mad at people who have come into my shop and said "I would do anything to have a shop like this!  "

I turn to them and say " its that right? You would be willing to give up 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week for the next 10 years? Give up everything? Forgo having an income in exchange for having a shop? Invest every last bit of energy you have?

When someone says " I would do anything" I take offense... It doesnt take just anything... It takes EVERYTHING...

Good thing I like it :D

There are days I very much envy my friends who have a simple clean shop not cluttered with "stuff" My friend Nick R is a fantastic metalworker, better than me for sure... And I could carry off all his hand tools in my arms, one trip.... I ask him one day how he did anything without any tools.... he looked at me funny and said I just do it B)

You are very right in what you say. I personaly do not have that kind of drive even though I am very pasionite about what I do. To all who look at this and envy what Larry has remember it is a double edge sword, so be careful what you wish for you might just get it. ;)
  7. All this being said is good advise and I would like to throw in my two cents worth and add a rod which no one else has mentioned and is very easy to run in fact runs practicly by itself if you strike a arc and just lay the rod down and is not very expensive is 6013. ;)

  9. nice looking shop.
    how much did it cost?
I was planing on wood walls to keep the heat down. Summer in South Louisiana is HOT.

    Thanks!

This building cost $16.00 a sq. ft. That will be complete. The actual cost of the building is $10.50 a sq. ft. I contracted it myself and called in past favors from some old ironworking buddies to help erect it. I have 312 man hours to put it up. I am lining the inside lenght of the building with T-11 siding also. I will post some pictures on a thread I started a few months ago on shop floors of the inside floor when I finish. It will be 1/2 concrete and 1/2 crushed stone 1/4 minus.

If anyone decides to build a building like this I would be happy to give advise. The first is to do your home work on suppliers. There are some sales practices out there that are worst than used car salesman.

Yes Glenn I hold service every morning now when I go out and open the doors and thank God for another day! :D
