  1. ok so very green blacksmithing newb here. quick question about using galvy. i know the fumes are nasty and its not to be heated but are there any thoughts about using it for a half hood? would it get hot enough to cause a problem in the smithy? any thoughts would be appreciated.
  2. lol yeah i'd rather not die of zinc poisoning, but yeah its getting the floor flange to fit the forge that i havent been able to find. im going to try a few plumbers supply stores around here and hope to get lucky.
  3. i just recently purchased a vulcan firepot. it looks like the opening for the air pipe is 3". the only problem is that i cant find a flange anywhere that big. any ideas where i could find one or how to hook up the air pipe? i currently have a few lengths of 2" pipe and a hand crank blower.
  4. so i have an old cast iron sink and was thinking of trying to make it into a forge. it has two basins and is about ten inches deep. i believe it is ceramic coated inside. does anybody have any construction ideas? has this been done before? any foreseen problems? would it be too deep? could i possibly build it up or put something in it (clay, firebrick or brake drum) to decrease depth if needed? Thanks smithin' newb
  5. hey all, so when building my first forge im using a 2 inch flange to connect the firepot to the tuyere. problem being that the flange is galvanized. is this one part going to be an issue, or will the potential fumes be negligable?
  6. Hey all, i'm just starting to get into blacksmithing (by just starting i mean i dont even have the forge completely built yet) i was wondering where most people get their metal for forging from? there are not a lot of scrap yards up here in rhode island and i cant imagine everyone special orders blocks of iron and steel. i dont really have any specific plans as to what i am going to make. i figure i will make some basic tools and move on to ornamental pieces and blades and see where it takes me. any suggestions on where to start my collection?
