I've also seen a lid with a 40w light bulb in it, uses less power than the stock tank heater and it's cheaper, I think I might try it.

Looks good, and shiny! Different isn't necessarily bad. Having something that's the same as everyone else sucks.

I bought a new hair drier from Walmart for $10 with a 1 year warranty, so it's covered when i fry it:D

Welcome mike, there's a ton of information here and great help. Great to have you!

I just bought some yesterday list as follows:
1/4" round 20' - $5.00
3/8" square 20' - $9.00
3/8" round 20' - free
1/4 x 1" flat 20' - $14.00
1/4" square (cold rolled) 12' - $4.00
1/2" round 20' - $12.00
These are in canadian $$. And the best prices I've found so far around here.
I got the 3/8 round for free because the shipper screwed up. I pick up my steel and have it cut in half. I ordered square and he cut round, and said he can't put it back on the rack, so free!! -
A little off topic, but what brand of thermometer do you use, I've been looking for one that will read that high.

I just took his course a few weeks ago and built a version of the gas forge. It works great. I would definitely suggest getting the plans and building one.

Jay, good to see a fellow Canadian on!! Welcome to the site. The course you said you took last year, was that with David Robertson in Cargill? The burner construction is pretty simple, depending on what type of burner you want to use. There are tons of places on the net to find plans for burners. Good luck!
-
I built my single burner for around $150 and I'm working on the 2 burner, I figure it'll cost maybe $30 more than the single. It doesn't take too long to build them, and you do save some money. Plus, like Frosty said, I also like tinkering, just my $0.02

I work in a truck shop and we replace alot of brass air fittings, I keep them and melt them down, you could try local truck shops, might be surprised.

I made a sliding gate valve by cutting a slot in some 2" scet. 40 pipe and making a 1/8" plate to fit. I'll get some pics later today. hope it helps.

The tube is an old 30lb propane tank, about 12" dia with 3 layers of 1" Kaowool.

Congrats, do you have any pictures??? That may help if you are looking for info.

I would have to agree with wolf, not only because of the dust with coal, but the smoke is quite bad when starting the fire. I would also consider the use of propane, just my opinion. By the way, welcome to the site!!!

Sorry about the double post guys, could someone please delete one, thanks.

Yeah, it just came back online, they're probably still working the bugs out. If you want to do some reading, start with the blueprints, there's a ton of information there. Just prepare for alot of reading

Well, since I haven't been able to be reading and typing on this forum for the past few days, I finished building my first gasser and started on the second. It is a small single asperated burner and the second is a larger 2 burner. I am going to fire it in the morning and I'll post some pics. I can't wait!!!!:D

Acetylene regulators don't go high enough for propane. I don't think CO2 cylinders have the same thread as propane, I could be wrong. I got a regulator from my welding supply shop.
