  1. some of the isssues you have are settled with the type of cable you use i have some prestressing cable that you cant bend and is aprox 1/2 inch in dia. amd then i have used some 1 inch stuff for heavy rigging you could bend into a one foot loop. really depends on the wires the cable is made of ie. ind. dia. within the wire and the matl. the wire is made of. one minor caution the stiff cable i have will air quench to the brittleness of glass so it you weld it plan on quickly stress relieving it with oa torch and insulation to slow the cooling properties. just my .02$

  2. hint to all look for the companys that recycle freon. and contact me for som info if you live up near indy. . Just walked away from a aircraft fire supression maint.facility. have collected quite a few tanks of all kinds of shapes. the O2 tanks have a parkerizing coating in them but it will vaporize at low temp. And if you can find an aircraft maint. facillity you can get thin walled O2 tanks that make some nice bells have a few at shop.

  3. so did you see the flames? and where were they coming from? do you use a wrench to tighten the nut?how old is the regulator?the sealing surface does go bad after a while no mater how good you treat these things.o/a rigs need to be leak checked every time you set up the regulators.and for the welding permit up north thank a union member who wanted to make it harder for you to do than calling his union .

  4. they make a "squareng" jig it kinda looks like a z but the diagonal is sq. basicly it chucks up and gives you a whitness mark 180 deg. from each other. if you have a dial indicator you can use it here and dial in the cross slope. contact me if you need to. sorry bout the spelling guys lol

  5. henry what part of town are you in? i am in the subdivision behind kroger on 45. if you want i have an old fire plug sitting in my front yard you may have for a swage block if you want it. have no clue as to if it will work and ill help you pick the darn thing up! got it in austin back when i worked road construction.

  6. Hank to cool! i am curently learning under a smith down in santa fe. all the work i get to do is down in his shop. But i am sure he would like to meet you. We will definantly need to make some time to b.s. soon. If you need a old high pressure tank bottom to make spoons or bowls let me know i have a few that we can cut up.

  7. Hank heck i wish i had read this post earlyer! i have abunch of stuff to build forges. Drop me a note next time you are scrounging and ill bring you out to the scrap pile and go hunting. I work at a shop that reclames the halon out of the BIG fire bottles in computer rooms we get all kinds of pipe, and just plane stuff.

  8. if i may? A first blush the orig. question is a sword in the stone type post. but if you really read it they are asking a pretty good question for the uninformed. how do we KNOW that it will not work? how do we KNOW only nicro fine overlay will ocur? untill some lab somplace has done it WHO are WE to say it CAnt be done?the thought of making bimetal sawblades as cheep as they are know someone asked CAN WE? befor the now near common induction forges some had to ask COULD WE? Now our job as blacksmiths is not to close minds and say no. but to teach and hope the next generation can do better than we have.

Sorry just had to get that out there.

  9. do you know anyone who works around an old coal fired boiler unit? they have ball mills that crush the coal into talc powder then blow the fuel into the boiler. the balls on these thins are about 3+ inch in dia. .....Or you could find a ball hitch around 3" if i remeber corectly add a handle to it and that may stretch the sock out for him

  10. charlotte the smith i am working with is a full time farrier most of the year so maby we are thinking of the same vice. If i may ask what part of Louisana are you from?
