  1. I would like to build a brick forge in my shop. Where can I find plans or info on how to build an old style blacksmith stone or brick forge. Thank you for you help!
  2. Thank you for the advice. I live in Broadview Montana, about 35 miles NW of Billngs. Not sure what brand it is I will have to check. I just had my left knee replaced so it will be a while before I get it moved over. Might be a few months, but cant wait to go to the shop and start to work again.
  3. I have no experience with a hammer, but I have a chance to get a old belt driven hammer from my neighbor that is in their old blacksmith shop. It is old, but in good condition. There is a shaft in the ceiling that a belt went to the shaft to the hammer. Can this be converted to a motor. If so it would be a good addition to my shop. If anyone has any experience in doing this I would greatly appreciate any information on how this works. Thank you very much for your help! Frank
  4. Ladysmith We inlay silver in metal for spurs and bits this way. It should be able to do copper as well. Aneal the copper it so it is soft and it should flow. Carve out your shape in the metal, do the undercut to the sides so you have a place to lock in the copper (the dovetail that was mentioned) Also you can lift little slivers of steel in the cut out face (all through out the cut out portion). THis way when you hammer in the copper the raised slivers of metal will dig into the copper and when flattened down by the hammering it will hold down the copper. The combination of flowing the copper into the side cut outs as well as the slivers fo metal holding down the copper through out the piece should do the trick. Probably could do silver solder to hold the copper to the metal as well. Look for a jewlers book on inlay and onlay and it should give you a better discription. You could go to Igraver.com as well and ask the jewlers and engravers for tips on inlay. Also knifenetwork.com ask knife makers the same queston and they can help as alot of these guys do inlay Good luck. Frank
  5. I drink a lot of water, and I also have one of those neck coolers. You soak it in water and it expands. I tie this around my neck and it definitly helps keep me cooler. Occasionaly I re wet it in cool water.
  6. Thank you very much for the feed back on this. I appreciate it! Frank
  7. First of all I want to say this is a GREAT web site! I have learned a lot and was able to take part in last Tuesdays BP Chat. I have told several people about the site and they have enjoyed it as well. I look forward to tomorrows chat. I thought that somewhere I saw a BP on doing a longhorn steer head. I can not seem to find it. Can anyone let me know the BP number on this if it exists? I am taking a blacksmith class. Last night we did a horse head. The first one I did was kind of suspect, but the second one I did came out pretty good! Thanks for your help! Frank
  8. Howdy I just found the forum today. I have been taking a blacksmith class and am really interested in this. I just found a real nice blower, and am contemplating making a coal forge. Does anyone have any plans or ideas where I can find some. I appreciate your time and help. I am sure this has been brought up before, but as I said I am new to this today, and did not see any info on this. Have a great 4th Happy trails Frank
