  1. Speaking of flux- several folks have been doing good forge welds with NO FLUX, just the proper welding temp. I also watched a youtube vid where the man did all his forge welding [for the past several years] just spraying the material with WD40 before the initial heat, then using nothing from then on. These folks are mostly using gas forges- don't know if any are using coal or not. Because of the wear and tear of forge linings I am going to try my next Damascus billet with no flux or wd40 or anything. I have a lot of respect for the makers who have said they do this and want to try it. Sure be nice not to have to reline my forge after the flux eats the guts out :) You may want to give it a try, too.

  2. Aw Crap! I am jealous of how good your last giant stack came out :) Great job.
Can barely wait for the bank to open tomorrow so I can try the half dollars and doint the initial weld in the vice.

Thanks a million to all for contributing to this post!!!!!!

  3. Pike3e could we see how it came out? I guess I don't get the difference in the wheel making a diference in the finish? This is not any kind of challeng to what you said, and I believe you. Honest I do. Man, anything that cuts down on hand sanding is the next tool on my list :) Don't think I ever gave a softer (?) wheel any thought.
Can you explain for me? And tell us where you bought it?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  4. We are NOT NOT NOT getting bored with this topic. Several of us are following along reading everything you both type!
I had about given up, since I only got one usable billet from my 10 or 12 tries. I had been mixing coins and doing them in small batches. After reading along so far I have learned to use the 1/2 dollar coins after flattening them, and stack them up tall for a decent size billet. I just tried to get a couple rolls of halves but they arent't available here in our tiny town. They are on my list for next trip to the city.

I appreciate the typing you are ALL doing. This is GOOD stuff!
