  1. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the input. This is a great web site! Mike.
  2. I have aquired a dozen large ball bearings (3") from a crane base. I have heard that they would make a good knife, any thoughts on this. Thank you. Mike.
  3. I learned how to stick weld in the Iron Workers apprenticship back in "72". From then on I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Mig machine and taught myself. After that, I bought a Tig machine to weld aluminum and just started after it. When I had a problem, I got in the books and asked all the questions I could.
  4. Thanks guys for all the information. I am going to super quench just to find out how long it will work, but it is better to get the right steel for the job. I have aquired some H-13 and I believe it holds up to heat better for the fullering.
  5. Thanks for the replies, I am still learning my way around this great web site. I could have just used the search for a lot of answers. Mike
  6. Hi everybody. I am making some butcher dies for my home made guillotine fuller. I know that a tool steel would be better, but all I have at the moment is some mild steel to do the job. It is 3/4 inch thick so I thought maybe if I heated to a dull red or until de-magnetized then dunked it that maybe it would harded somewhat. What are your thoughts about this? Thank you for your responses. Mike.
  7. I appreciate the information I have received, I thought that there is more to that copper than meets the eye! recycle here it comes. Thanks again. Mike.:)
  8. I am fairly new to this forum and I think you have found the right place to ask the question about your interest in Blacksmithing.. There are good people here and willing to help all they can, fact is most Blacksmiths are. I have found this forum very helpful for me. Again, Thank you very much for you service to our country.;)
  9. Howdy guys and gals. I am new to this forum and have a question about forging some copper. I have come across some electrial buss bars that are 1/4"x 1-1/2" and have a silver coating on them. One of my projects incorperates copper bamboo in a wooden frame and I would like to make some hinges and a latch for it. Would it be safe to heat them in my propane forge without some kind of deadly fumes? Not sure about the silver coating on the copper. Thanks a lot. Mike.
  10. Howdy, my name is Mike and have been doing blacksmith work for a few years as a hobby and been working with steel in fabrication, welding, erection and just plain fun for a number of years. (can't remember how many) ha. I'm looking forward to using this site to learn and maybe help others with my experience. Thank you. Mike. ;)
