  1. I think i will just use it till I know what I'm doing with the heat treatment process. I had looked through the forums first but I could find much info specifically about treating hammers. Thanks for your input and the info though!
  2. So you dont think heating the faces up to purple and quenching would improve the hardness enough to keep the mushrooming at bay? Keep in mind I have no idea what I am talking about so if I get my terminology wrong forgive me. But please set me straight!
  3. So I picked this 3lb hammer up today at the local flea market and I need some help. I put a new handle in it and took down the mushrooming and indentions down with a flap wheel. Now should do any heat treatment to the faces and if so what should be done to it? Any and all comments would be appreciated!
  4. My wife has me on vacation! I've been getting on IFI on my phone and I can't see everything on the Mobil version like I can on the desktop version!
  5. Hey wayne check your messages on here bud you didn't give me you number yet so I can't call you haha!
  6. Hey guys I've made a few posts already but I thought I should make it official here. I think I have everything I need to start but someone that knows more than me that is willing to help. I can teach myself with books and videos but I love watching a smith work! Anyway I hope to learn and make some stuff to show you all soon! Oh and thanks for the warm welcome and all the help the members have provided already!
  7. Is this still going to happen? I would like some more information and directions please!!
  8. Well I put it on the tailgate so we will see what happens but ima use her till someone takes her away! Thanks for all the help and positive comments.
  9. This is it all cleaned up! K.C. - it does have a done shapes indenting in the center on the bottom but I didn't take a pic of it, I can you think it would help. Manley- thanks for looking it up, we know two things for sure it's old and heavy lol.
  10. I'm in the process of removing the paint, I only like half of one side to be done, i will post some pics when I'm done. I was looking at some other colonial era anvils and I think it resembles a mouse hole, is this a possibility? There is clearly a "15" on the side at the far right I'm unsure if this is the original hundredweight mark or something else. I am seriously considering putting it up for trade but I think re-enacting would be something I might be into. I'm unsure at this point. Can someone shed some light on this or me!
  11. Holy crap i meant just a coat of Black spay paint, not making it look like Al Borland or crocheting animal shaped anvil coozies lol. It looks nice oiled down by the way!
  12. Nice find! Look like its in really good shape can't wait to see it all buffed and painted! Now get to work!
  13. What's the best way to get it cleaned up so I can see what's under the paint?
  14. I hit it with my hammer and it has good rebound, almost took the hammer out of my hands. It looks like I can see the hundredweight being 1.0.15. Now if I can make some tools and some money ill be set!
  15. I paid $200 for it but to be honest I'm not a collector. So I would trade or sell it for something I wouldn't be scared of damaging. I respect the craft and its history too much to ruin a piece of it...I guess ill look for something to beat on like a RR track and try to move this one...
  16. Ahh crap now I don't even want to use it now cause I'm afraid ill ruin it... just kidding (sorta). I dont really care about selling it but what is the ballpark value of my anvil? As I've learned with guns old doesn't mean expensive but collectable and colonial sound valuable. I really just want to know if I got taken and if ill have to wait another 200 years to get my money out of it lol. Thanks so much for the replys guys I'm pumped to get some coal fired up in my virgin brake forge!
  17. Ok my bad I thought I did post pics. I'll try to get more in the morning but this is the best I can do, it looks like someone painted it to keep it from rusting or something. It looks like there might be a hundredweight on it i see "15" on the right side. Thanks for the quick reply!
  18. I'm so new at this my anvil is shiny!

  19. Hey guys im seth and im new to smithing. I just picked this up the other day and the guy said it was pre-civil war. From what I can tell its colonial pattern, it's 123# and has a 3/4" hardy hole. It looks beat up so I am wanting to know if its a good anvil and if its worth grinding down the surface?
