So this is the slightly more finshed version of my first attemp at forge welding anything other than scrap and cable and I'm quite pleased with it although there are some lines where the 1095 went in. I feel like it maybe could've failed to weld in a few spots but it seems alright otherwise. I've learned heaps and still find a few more tools could be useful

Believe me, I've been trying to make this happen for quite a while. I've sent so many emails I would hate to guess the number. I've received only two replies and both were to say they couldn't provide what I was looking for. I've made some difficult projects and let me tell you, none of them tested me as much as finding supplies in Canada for my forge! I only came on here to thank you all and I will leave it at that.

Hi Neighbor........I would agree that finding specific parts for many hobbies in Canada may be somewhat difficult and at time's very limited.......maybe before you go, ask in this post what you were looking for and maybe somebody can help. I'm not sure if buying a forge is in your cards or not to perhaps leep over your current dilemma but I just found a beauty of a coal forge for $100, perfect shape , ready to fire.........I'm never in a rush to buy anything and every so often a great deal or 2 or 3 come along.........hope you change your mind and giver again......if you'd rather p.m. me, please do, who knows maybe we can find what your looking for.......there are many members on here I'm sure that would be willing to help or assist.

found this little guy today with a vise and they both followed me home.........

all I can make out after a bit of wire brushing is a 32lbs stamp about 1/2 way down on the left side

below the stamp their looks to be initial ''W" then an "O" or a ''U'' and then another "O" or "U" ? could be something else but that's what it looks like  

it weighs 31+ lbs      2.5'' x 9'' face , 5.5'' horn

As you make progress please update this thread and I'll do the same.  It'd be helpful to know what others are using for a motor.  Regarding the mobile design, I like having the option to move it around as my garage/shop has limited space.  Currently I'm using a 1x30 HF belt grinder.  It works okay to make small kitchen knives, but isn't very efficient.

My KMG has a 1.5HP Baldor 3450rpm single pulley, it's my main metal hogger and the 1.5 works perfect to my needs for this part of profiling. They are expensive to fork out the money initially but in my opinion well worth the saving up for..........

my other 2 x 72 is a home-bru 2 wheel upright with a 1.5 hp Baldor 1750rpm........both work great

drive wheel and pully diameter will affect your grinding power to some degree...........

as for the electrical part of it , it really is quite simple........be more than happy to assist with pictures of grinder setup, wiring drawings / diagrams if you need........hope this helps a bit 

Wow is that a SWEET deal!  I'd like it a lot better though if it was going in my garage.  What's the weight on that one?

thanks DC , ya I'm pretty happy........as for the weight , there looks to be a kg mark on the back but a little tough to read and also a fraction on the front to the left of 'Brooks'

when I pull it off the stump to redo base (little loose with rail spikes holding it in place) I will weigh it ,............pretty certain its in the 120-130lb range....... 

older but new to me me Brooks anvil and 3 pair well used tongs for $100 !!  :D

excellent overall condition , pretty happy with this one........

hope to pick up my forge tomorrow.......and get to some hammering on the weekend

Forged 5 flatters this weekend with Lyle Wynn, David Gaddis and Stan Bryant.  Came out pretty nice.

didn't have time to search all the threads looking for answers already posted as suggested but to answer your question , hand sand with fine grit, seal with epoxy , light sand and polish...........no pay tuition required :P   

all mine get a min of 400 grit by hand , then up to the end-user from there.........

thanks for posting, I looked at a forge similar to yours today............deciding on coal or gas , still not sure which way I'm going to go...........look forward to your tong pics !! 

Hello I'm Rob from British Columbia Canada and I have a new addiction.......................

I'm a self taught knife maker, primarily stock removal, but have recently become infatuated with forging and all that comes with it...........

I was introduced to this site by fellow knife-maker Brad also from Canada.......and a couple other makers north of the border that I know that frequent this site which also encouraged and I personally blame for my recent acquisitions !!!      LOL it's all good !!

I have many questions that you'll see here shortly , thought a quick intro would be a good idea....so thanks for reading this and I look forward to interacting and being a part of this site..............
