Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm gonna check out sheet metal/tread prices. If not that, then I think I'll probably go for concrete board with some fire-resistant paint. That sounds cheap.

Ever since I got started with welding, I've been doing all my hot work outside on my stone porch for fire resistance/safety. However, I've really gotten tired of lugging my tanks about 100' uphill from the shed/shop, and I really don't want to contemplate moving around the forge I'm building. The shed is large enough to work as a smithy as well (Is that going to be a problem? Should I just install a sawdust collector?), but it has a wooden plank floor, and I'm worried about fire resistance.
I'd rather save my money for steel and a nice anvil. What is the cheapest way I can install a functional, fireproof floor?
I've got about an inch of clearance to install the floor in before I start running awry of doors and such. -
Does that demo indicate that you can enamel using a forge? I've only done it with a kiln, and there don't seem to be any pictures of the actual firing in the photo set.

I think you mean Acetylene. I'll leave the answer to more experienced individuals (though I suspect the answer will be no), knowing the right terminology will help you find what you're looking for.

Should I weld the bolts in place?

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm pretty flexible about the grate. However, if I'm not doing the drilled-hole style, maybe I could skip out on the expensive plate entirely? Then what would I do about the side holes?

Hello everyone. I've been trying to build a forge, and, based on the designs from Hrisoulas, I've come up with an idea for a firepot. The design is illustrated in the attached diagram.
I intend to weld it with my oxyacetylene torch.
It'll be mounted in the center of a 16ga hearth, framed with 1/8"x1 1/2" angle iron.
Does this look reasonable to you folks? Thanks for any feedback.
Good height for a forge?

I was about to cut the legs for my forge today, but then it occurred to me: I have no idea how tall it should be. Centaur Forge lists their coal forges as 31" tall, but that seems a little low to me (I'm about 6' even). About how high should my forge be (to the top of the firepot)?
