  1. I look at the blueprints and galleries here on IforgeIron. Also I carry a camera or use my digital camera to capture pictures of all things iron. Also there are lots of books to read that have projects and exercises to do. Also google image searches.
  2. Frosty, I make it a point to help the neighbors, pesky and otherwise. Learned it from my folks as a kid and have practiced it ever since. Sometimes an unexpected good deed changes the dynamic amazingly. I'ld a mowed the guys lawn no matter what but the fact that I even offered to help seemed to amaze the lady even though I have snow blowed their yard for three years!!! Someday I am going to be old and infirm or laid up and just hope that someone will help me too. And when I am gone they just might keep an eye on my wide for me. What do they call it 'Paying it Forward'?
  3. I limit the duration to 3-4 hours at a time during daylight hours and try to keep the smoke to a minimum using good fire management. No one has complained yet. I'll be moving it all indoors this fall which will help with any sound issues. I have had two neighbors say they liked hearing the sound of the anvil. The one neighbor who is iffy about it all has triplets and she is just overwhelmed so I say lots of good things about her kids. Her husband just broke his arm so I am cutting their lawn for the next 12 weeks. That should earn some grace points.
  4. The other thing thatI got out of the deal was about four hours of conversation with a guy who started his apprenticeship to a farrier 35 years ago and had to give up his profession because of health reasons. He had all sorts of stories, tips for things I was working on and I think I could call him for advise any time. Now that's a score.
  5. Finnr, When it rains it pours. Looks like you had a good week too. I don't know what others have experienced but it seems that the more folks know I do this the more stuff seems to come my way. Little scraps or the odd tool.
  6. I answered an add on craigslist and brought home six buckets of tools, 3 buckets of scrap steel (some tool grade), 50 plus horse shoes and 250# of bituminous coal. There were 87 different hammers, chisels, punches, tongs, top swages, pritchels and hardy tools. On average I paid less than three bucks each for the tools. Here is the photo gallery.
