yay finaly a portable forge craigslist finaly came through and
well as you can see it needs some work fore ut was bought in the late 1800's has no makers mark and has been sitting half burried in a yard for the past 40 years but mud is not a bad thing at all because it prevented serious rusting only one peice left to free up -
i have used one for the past year and i finaily got a 3/4 inch ball valve and it works great for me in my forge
-
i just soak the handles in straight antifreze they will rarely come lose again and its almoast impossable to remove a broken handle with out drilling it out
-
they will work well if brine quenched and super quench works well also
-
5 gallon bucket by the forge and some 50# bags in the garrage
-
Ed your knives are truly amazing
Besides, where else can a guy play in fire all day long, and not get in trouble for it!
now that i think about it thats moast what smithing is -
the entire blade is useable for paternwelding
and the bar is tipicaly aluminum but some are steel and you can use them for something -
um i would try and hold off on the heat
most here have herd of paw paw
and no brass is not galvnization BUT
if you over heat it you will end up with molten copper and gasious zinc oxide(that will kill you)and it is cumliative in the body
we all value your input here so please be careful -
i am just wondering why the brake drum is flush and covered with a grate it seams that might be more effective to have the brake drum rased a little and a smaller tweer
but you might be on to something you would get a fairily even burn across a large aria -
i cant see nate's link becayse of tecnical issues on my end so sorry if i post the same thing
this is a effective charcol making furnice and its not to hard to make
Making Charcoal -
it would seam that it would burn through but i used a tin can with nail holes, a shop vac and some logs for my first forge
YouTube - forge tour
i have sceine upgraded to coal but that can lasted and about 4 inches were left bare iron as a grate and it lasted for some odd reason
so the wok is definitily a a higher gauge twere just make shure its not Al and you will be fine -
black crow there has got to be an old foundry bulding in portland some whare they tipicaly have tools in the inner depths
-
i have just found the jackpot of all smithging supplys in my area but have been sworn to secracy by the locals
i useto think that MO had been stripped of all tools (now to find a decent scource of local steel) every area has it's pitfalls
look in the most unlikely of places -
nice work i like it alot
-
i have been asked to make a small peice of ladder pattern plate buti had have a few questions before i answer with a price
can i just putit in the rolling mill hot till it comes out to 14 gauge or is something elase involved

how would one etch a 12" X 12" plate?
thanks in advance for your replys
the freind is an armorer and it is to go to a "special project" -
i would just leave it alone the lead was proly put in to kill the ring if it is a cast steel anvil

i like it
my gig is a spear type i diddent forge it
but it is just a 3 point hand held garden pitch fork on a 6 foot shaft with a surgical rubber loop oppsite the head so self launching it works -
rich it will be put to work hollow grinding knives most of the time
-
