jet i am not a fan of gas forges but if you must there is a forge simmlar to what your describeing
but if it was me i would use the small barrel and get a 2inch pipe and a t jont put dumping ashgrate as frosty descirbed somewhare with a exaust cap on one end
put on a flatbar on the other end of the t jont to act as a grate
cut a hole int the bottom of the drum and the side so the pipe will fit through
pack clay aroud the grate end in the drumto form a firepot or use firebrick
set a shop vac to blow and fire it up
o dont use anay galvnised pipe or fittings we all would miss your input grately -
Antique Champion Blower & Forge Co. Drill Press
i am in the areia right now and was just wondering if i should get it
but to me it loohs compleate and well kept and for the price i looks really cheap thanks for all responces -
i havent gotten a question in a while but i have gotten the same rude statement alot
"THEY MAKE HORSE SHOES"
i tell them i dont
and if they insist i say "alright ill make a horseshoe, (turn around put a peice of metal in the fire) face them and say HEAAAA! HEAAAAA! get a here."
they tipicaly leave confused or laughing
what a hot summer demo day does to the head -
i have used a simmlar setup for a while the major diffrence is that my flu blast dosnt have a regulator/valve but it works well
now if icould only finish it:rolleyes: -
i have had metal appearing at my shop but the big peices are 250#3/8 galvnised cable(stream team) a pipe 24 inch dimeter 3feet long(construction scraps) and old corroded transmission?
the transmission just materilised and is sort of puzzleing as to where it came from mabe START (stream trash art) program -
um thats one big anvil good find
-
nice job the level of fun only goes up from here
you will get better heat and less downtime if you skip the briquets find coal charcoal wood corn (yes i have used all of these and they all work well) or something that dosent contain a mass of limestone most of your heat goes to makeing quicklime and not to the iron
thus more hammer time -
i think most questions have been answered but dose any one know how answer the question "do you shoue elephants?" followed quickly by his responce "i dod once the shoues are as big as your chest, see you dont know what your doing here." and he walked off
leaveing me compleatly confused
do they shoe elephants?
if they do how big are the shoes (weight and size)?
and is this question just a random occourance or has it happened before? -
STOP NOW!!!!! before it drops its bad with iron but alum i dont even want to see that bill
DONT TEST IT WHAT EVER YOU DO IT WILL NOT END WELL FIND SOMETHING ELSE THIS WILL HURT YOU THE ALUM WILL LIKELY IGNITE AS DAN SAID
just take the drain out and trade it for stock a brakedrum or somethong else you can use. I melt 1/4 inch alum plate shreds for casting. it melts in a coal fired furnace in a little under a miniute in a crucable and i have had it ignite before
just listen to dan and any others this is not safe i appoligise for being ro repetive but this is really not a good idea and you will likely be injured if not mamed
sorry for the rant -
i am 15 and started when i was 9 and there are many other pepole our age so your not alone
1. tongs, got an olt pair of plyers. vicegrips? they will work to a point
2. anvil anything you can pound on will work to start but try and stick to iron drops and such (stay away from moms good china:o)
3. forge brake drum forge or as was above mentioned the 55 forge
oh and be safe hot metal hurts and just when you think you have got it will try and mame you when your not paying attention
be safe have fun any ione correct me if i have bad info
thanks -
i don't know about the anvils but here are some ideas for the rail Index to Anvil Making articles
and for the vice i have gotten by with a 20# craftsman bench vice for the past while just make sure you have it held down well to a solid object (ie. stump )
hope fully someone else can help you with the anvils -
nice find
i havent used CC 70# anvil but i have used simmlar ones and the small rebound is probaly caused by the lack of mass under the striking face because the mass is distributed more in the horn than the base/neck
anyone correct me if i am wrong -
fixiehorse you live really close to me
and nice find on the crane hook it will serve as a great anvil -
i have bean given about 250# worth of 1/2 inch galvinized(why) cable
i know i cant forge, weld or heat it up in general so is it worth keeping or what should i do with it -
I started with a brick fire pit, a rock, and a construction hammer. You're doing great.
nice to see that someone has started out the same way that i did except in a campfire and a gold pan for for an air blast the hammer was the least tireing thing -
an alternate option is to go the route i was forced to and use a scrubber i have used mine for about a year and have had no problems
scrubber -
mike hit the nail on the haed
thats more than what i started with
what are you going to ues for fuel coal or charcoal if your going to use charcoal dont get the briquets they are mostly limestone filler get lump charcoal
slack tub a 5gal bucket works ok and is chaep
as for the anvil it works as is but i may recomend this site to fancy it up a bit
you have more than i satrted with have fun and be safe -
i am proly lucky but i can still buy 3/8 round 20' for $1.78 +tax thats what i paid a week a go
-
just try to be kind and respectful
and someone will eventuly invite you to some smithing function someware -
well put matt
-
simmonds
this is how i got startedthere is always one or two kids in the groups that are very interested and you will spark an interest that can last a lifetime. That was what happened to me.
i may recomend that you not let thewm use your good hammers or anvil because its likely to take a lot of abuse get a RR anvil or a hf ASO this will be cheaper in the long run -
yes i could but i just used cyanide as an example lots of other chemicals on them
-
not all are radio active but have some other nasty thing on them
whale they would be nice i dont think its wise to mess around with scinide and other nasty stuff -
slightly more radioactive than granite for those afraid of nuclear anvils.
ahhhhh please dont remind me of those anvils taunting me in that ware house ist a giant bulding fill of anvills about 95% are radio active or have some nasty chamicals on/in them
the ones that escaped incarceration in the lacal super fund site
all from 10# to 500+ they just taunts me
Forge weld flux
in Fluxes used in blacksmithing
Posted
i havent tried it
but i think as long as they are welding rods and not brazeing rods the flux should work
only concerns i might have is the flux might be a lower temp and just burn off or react with something in the forge and make something bad for the health
