  1. I pm'd you sir. I would be honored and I have something you may like also.
  2. http://www.westyorkssteel.com/tool-steel/high-speed-steel/m2/ Info on m2 steel
  3. Thank you everybody for the input!!! It is very much appreciated, thank you for the knowledge I am very open to learning and always willing to accept constructive criticism. I've spent a bit of time with the old gentlemen that gave me these blades and we have been able to identify several as M2 HSS and have pulled these ones out specifically. After a bit of internet search I have found this info on M2 steel. Sound like this steel may be a lot more work then worth. I had hoped to be able to cut blanks out of the larger pieces and forge them out into small blades but seams this steel is not a good choice for this. I was so inspired and for sure I had something good...well that's life. Just seems a shame ask this steel. Well the wood is still good I'll just have to buy some steel stock so I at least get to start making some knives. Thank again always appreciated.
  4. I'm still very much a rookie but I think if there good enough for high speed crown molding blades, I should be able to get something nice from them. They were hardend to some degree, several have been blued from running to fast and won't hold an edge unless they get sent back to be sharpened and retempered. I guess we will see. Wish me luck
  5. It has been a very long year but I never lost the itch. I keep learning, reading and watching, every day. I have just been given a very large supply of raw materials in trade for you awsome knife. These may not be ideal but free and abundant always help. Here's my idea. Cut the largest piece out of the bigger blades. These can be forged down to blades.... small pieces I can learn to weld buy putting a sliver of this between a folded spring steel. My hopes, are buy the time I get through the bigger blades and do a few cores welded with this. I should be ready to do some Damascus. Now it is a reach to see the handles but these are the left over blanks from hard wood skate boards. The corners blanks I can cut out can average 4"x5" and 3"x4" 7/8th thick and are a blend of Oak, Maple, European Beach, Mahogany and Purple Heart Wood. This should be a good start but please any suggestions would be appreciated. Any ideas on something cool, just let me know. Here we go again...I'm so ready
  6. Think I'll stop at 2000 grit. Should I olive oil the wood after that. I know it was why cheap to go with the torched wood on the handle but it was free. Allot of work on the blade haven't hardened yet. Going to read about hardening with a MAP torch. Just can't fire up forge right now and I wasn't to keep going forward. Anyway thanks for looking please comment good is good but bad teaches. Peace Angel.
  7. Working the handle. It was a 4x4 cedar fence post stump.
  8. Sorry Rich I will admit I've not doesn't allot of time in the knife making lessons. I am lucky enough to be able to take these photos as i work. I have a few books and feel I have the idea, just a bit wowed. Maybe needing a sounding board.
  9. I've been working on this for the knife. I'm a bit confused, maybe just overload but a bit lost. Not real sure what to do with these. Input welcome and needed. Last picture is my idea so far. I have about 5 hours into this so far. Both small plates are files and sanded 220-400. I'll mic them at the shop tomorrow ( these were the octagon barrel of the tee flattened and split). Hex patteren cut into top of two of the round barrels. One barrel as shown is filed and sanded 220-400 (this is kind of the problem, do i continue cutting the other two barrels or save them round?). My inspiration I could say was a mini chefs knife with the more asianish round/cylinder like handles. Thanks again for looking.
  10. Amazing and inspirational. I WILL WORK, STUDY, BLEED IF I HAVE TO. I will be a knife maker! Bravo sir. You have fanned the fire in my heart by your art and skill, BRAVO!!!
  11. I've done a couple small videos of some of my hand filing. Please critique. This was my first try. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5PRlzJF8pys http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tb1ozybgnU
  12. So I took advice from last knife and got some better metal. Went to shed got a old 5/8 chisel from a box unopened since before I was born. I've added a pic of my sad knife making tool box and a few pic of the one knife I just started.
  13. Thank you for the kind words. A few process pictures. That poor little re bar had no chance. I know its tiny. But the thought process was to stay small and not get discouraged doing it all hand file. I am reading "The Complete Bladesmithing" he mentions how he don't know if any body really has a natural talent for file work but I will say, I LOVED IT! My knife making tool box: Dewalt grinder with a very worn flapper wheel Bench grinder (half a stone) buffer wheel on the left (no rouges yet) Four files (half round/cross cut, rat tail, small three side, small round and a brass rod) Lansky set, a few small wet and dry stones and lots of sand paper.
